For our next Sunday Live, on 1/29 at 3pm ET / 1pm MT, we will be viewing "The Country Girl."
In "The Country Girl," Bing Crosby plays a formerly successful, but now down-and-out singer/actor struggling with alcoholism owing to a personal tragedy. His once happy, but now despairing wife, played by Grace Kelly, is skeptical when a brash young theater director, played by William Holden, wants to cast Crosby as the star of his new Broadway show in what could be a career comeback role for Crosby.
All your initial assumptions about the characters will be challenged as director George Seaton unfolds an emotional, Clifford Odets penned melodrama through the skillful use of flashbacks. "The Country Girl" also captures three iconic actors at the top of their game in a story worthy of their talents.
Please join us for a fun on-line chat as we view "The Country Girl" this Sunday.

Even if I wasn't already looking forward to it, this paragraph made me want to watch the film:

Don't you love it when Hollywood tries to make someone like Grace Kelly look plain by putting her in dowdy clothes and glasses and giving her a mousy hair color, like that's going to make her look anything other than gorgeous.
Even if she's too pretty for the role, she's still outstanding playing a tired, beaten-down wife of an alcoholic in "The Country Girl," so much so, she walked away with a Best Actress Oscar for her performance.
And here is Ms. Kelly studying the script (funny, but she did wear glasses in real life and, of course, she did look gorgeous in them).

There was a revival from March to May 72 on Bway with Maureen Stapleton, Jason Robards and George Grizzard.
This feature film adaptation was made in 1954 near the end of Bing Crosby's long-time contract at Paramount. He started at the studio in 1931 and would only make one more Paramount flick after THE COUNTRY GIRL, in 1956 (ANYTHING GOES with Donald O'Connor & Mitzi Gaynor).

Bing is known as a singer and light-comedy artist, not a dramatic actor.
This film and a 1971 TV movie 'Dr. Cook's Garden' were his only two serious roles.
Ironically, this story is about a boozer...and William Holden was a lifelong alcoholic.

I'm sure it's lost on today's culture, but Bing had his own style of cool.

So we are told Kelly's character is a girl from the country...hence the title. Married to him for ten years...starting in 1944...their son died in 1946.
