We are told the wife runs interference for him. He's a leaner, she's the woman he leans on.
Holden doesn't like strong women, as if they are toxic...poison.
Lots of woman hating here in Odets' dialogue.
Some of it feels like a live TV drama. To be fair, Kelly is actually coming out the good person and Frank as the *ss. Well yes, she is the better person. But still Odets is using the storyline to take jabs at women. I can only imagine what Luise Rainer thought when she watched the play and saw the movie. Clearly her ex-husband still had unresolved issues about their former marriage.

She regards her husband as a cunning drunkard.
I think 'drunkard' has disappeared from our language now. Most people say drunk, as a noun, instead of drunkard.
We say 'that person is a raging drunk.' We don't say 'that person is a drunkard' anymore.

Bing is known as a singer and light-comedy artist, not a dramatic actor.
This film and a 1971 TV movie 'Dr. Cook's Garden' were his only two serious roles.
Ironically, this story is about a boozer...and William Holden was a lifelong alcoholic. What about Little Boy Lost and Man on Fire?

He needs the syrup with 22% alcohol for his cough.
I love this dressing room scene.
She suspects he's hidden another bottle somewhere.
Yet Odets is letting us think the woman is the villain.

Yet Odets is letting us think the woman is the villain. But again, Kelly is also the hero - Bing sells her out and Holden is arrogantly wrong.

This feels like a three-character play. I can see why Paramount did not put more money into it and give it the VistaVision and Technicolor treatment like they did for WHITE CHRISTMAS the same year. It's not very cinematic. It really seems like a filmed play, which is okay...it's character driven and depends on the three lead actors.

More female bashing on aisle 6. Holden says he has no time to outmaneuver Kelly and calls her a frustrated female.
If this were remade today, it would have more politically correct dialogue without the woman being seen as the bitch/problem.

There's that "cunning drunk." Yes, he lies and lies and lies.

Agreed, the lack of budget is obvious, but I think the movie is better for it. The black and white and frugality works for the feel of Bing's and Kelly's characters.

Lounge singer Jacqueline Fontaine appears around the 69-minute mark.
She is still living as I write this...she's 95 years old now.

True, but this is also true, there are still needy men, men who lie, arrogant men and bitchy women - they all still exist as do good men and good women, we just don't want to hear about some types of people anymore.
The irony here is that Kelly is the one truly good person of the three.

The irony here is that Kelly is the one truly good person of the three. But it's not enough that she's the good one of the three. She is the one Odets allows to be character-assassinated at nearly every turn. He clearly has problems with women and his writing reflects that. This is not politically correct dialogue and it would have to be altered in a remake. No way would it get the green light if it wasn't changed. She could still be edgy and misunderstood...but the dialogue could not have others hate her in such a vile way.

The broken mirror scene was way over the top. It was cringe worthy and I would have eliminated it.

The scene where they bail him out of jail is excellent. This contains Bing Crosby's best acting in any movie.
He is allowing us to see a more unpolished, flawed man...and it's a richer characterization.
