True, but this is also true, there are still needy men, men who lie, arrogant men and bitchy women - they all still exist as do good men and good women, we just don't want to hear about some types of people anymore.
The irony here is that Kelly is the one truly good person of the three. But it's not enough that she's the good one of the three. She is the one Odets allows to be character-assassinated at nearly every turn. He clearly has problems with women and his writing reflects that. This is not politically correct dialogue and it would have to be altered in a remake. No way would it get the green light if it wasn't changed. She could still be edgy and misunderstood...but the dialogue could not have others hate her in such a vile way. I agree with what you wrote about how it would be done today, but it's not a good thing as we just swapped out one set of rules with another. The truth is everything - the good and the bad about all of us - but we still don't like that.

Bing's character hates himself, wants everyone to validate him. Is this Odets writing from his own life's experience?
"Pathetic hints of frailty" is what the dialogue tells us.
He had projected his suicidal tendencies on to his wife.

So Bing's character used the accident to cover his fears in life? That seems like trite psychology. I don't really buy this Mr. Odets, but whatever LOL
When he attempted suicide...it wasn't really with the intention of killing himself.
He bled himself back into attention. I do get an image of that. LOL

Holden's agrees with you. He's calling Bing on it.

I agree this is one of Bing's best performances and one of William Holden's best, too.

So who did Bing Crosby lose the Oscar to in '55?
Marlon Brando for ON THE WATERFRONT.
Did Brando really give the better performance???

We never see who appears as the leading lady in the play. I find that humorous. We see other cast members, but never the play's leading lady, though the ads for 'The Land Around Us' indicate her name is Eleanor Russell, I think.
On to opening night in New York...yay...they've made it this far now.

In New York, Grace Kelly now looks more attractive...since her kiss with William Holden.
We are told it's been nine weeks since the beginning of rehearsals till they arrived on Broadway. That seems pretty fast.
They first kissed five weeks ago. I'm sure they've kissed many more times since then, but the production code won't allow us to see them have an extra-marital affair...if she is going to remain in good standing at the end of the picture.
