The production code wouldn't allow it, but clearly Holden and Kelly were supposed to have slept together in Boston.

Like the fashion show sequence in THE WOMEN, I would have had the stage musical scenes in Technicolor...to show us he has a very vibrant and flashy time when he's performing, in direct contrast to the somber themes backstage in his life.

They first kissed five weeks ago. I'm sure they've kissed many more times since then, but the production code won't allow us to see them have an extra-marital affair...if she is going to remain in good standing at the end of the picture. We had the same thought.

Will she choose William Holden or stay with Bing Crosby?
The production code tells us what the outcome will be.

That's a Chekhov line “Any idiot can face a crisis; it's this day-to-day living that wears you out.”

The after show party...
He sees his wife in the other room...realizes wifey has been playing footsies with his director.
He gives a speech about the end of his marriage?
I wanted him to set the coffee cup down and be less civil for a moment and punch Holden out! LOL

He hears that old tune again. A musical and dramatic motif.
We know he'll get the Tony and his wife back.

Interestingly we see her run off after her husband, across an intersection at night. It's a long shot when she reaches up to him.
They do not get the obligatory embrace filmed in close-up.
Instead the bosses at Paramount give the last shot to Holden reading the paper.
Bing Crosby is near the end of his studio contract...but William Holden is the future, the star of the studio lot at this time...despite lower billing than Crosby here and billing under Bogart in SABRINA the same year.

That makes sense and explains why they didn't end on the street shot, which is where the movie should have ended.

I think what I am learning in these watch parties is there is no such thing as a perfect movie. The cultural attitudes and biases of the era sometimes gets in the way of enjoying individual scenes but the movie as a whole can still be worthwhile viewing and entertainment.
I agree with Andrea that the men do give outstanding performances. I think Grace Kelly's win was sort of a political one. The studio pushing her with the Academy. She's good but not better than Judy Garland in A STAR IS BORN or Dorothy Dandridge in CARMEN JONES. My opinion obviously.
