Tomorrow (3-8-24) RIO BRAVO (1959) is being shown on the INSP channel at 8:00 p.m. - on DirecTV that's 364. The only down side to this channel is that unlike TCM, it is not commercial free. I plan on watching because it is my absolute favorite Dean Martin film!!! He was in his prime in this movie and wanted to prove himself a dramatic actor after his years with Jerry. Also, other than singing with that wonderful voice of his, Westerns were his nitch! He grew up watching Westerns and they helped him learn English, so he was comfortable there (he only spoke Italian until he was 6 years old). He plays along side the great John Wayne and an early role for beautiful Angie Dickinson. Also, for the magnificent character actor Ward Bond, this would be his last film. He died in November of 1960. John Wayne and Dean would form a friendship making this movie that would last. In 1965 they made their second Western together -THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER. The Duke also appeared on Dean's Variety show many times. Like I've said before, even though I own every film Dean made on DVD, I love watching them when they're aired. So, I'll be enjoying RIO BRAVO tomorrow evening!!!

TCM is showing 1963 film TOYS IN THE ATTIC as part of this evenings tribute to play write Lillian Hellman. This movie stars Dean Martin, Yvette Mimieux, Geraldine Page, Wendy Hiller and Gene Tierney. As with many of Lillian Hellman's stories, this one deals with a subject not often talked about. Dean plays Julian and Geraldine Page and Wendy Hiller play his sisters. As the story progresses, one sister clearly is shown to have incestuous desires for her brother. I also enjoy Frank Silvera as Henry. TCM is playing this movie at 1:00 a.m. central time. As always, I'll be enjoying it.

Definitely worth a look topbilled.
A story about a southern family with lots of secrets and manipulation going on. Of course, this seems to be a common theme in many of Lillian Hellman's writings.

I agree, I really enjoyed this movie. It's not easy viewing, but it is a smart script with outstanding performances by Martin (one of his best), Page, Hiller and Mimieux. The broken southern family thing really had a moment in mid-century cinema.

So tomorrow, 4-24-24, is SOTM Marlon Brando's day for TCM to show some movies he made about WWII. Of course I've been waiting for THE YOUNG LIONS 1958! This story about three WWII soldiers stars Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift and Dean Martin. Also with Hope Lange, Barbara Rush and May Britt as the women that enter their lives. The story follows these soldiers and the effects that the war has on them. The film was a box office success and helped to change Dean Martin's career as an actor. A few pieces of interesting information - 1. Marlon Brando lobbied for his part to be tweaked from the character in Irwin Shaw's original novel the story was adapted from. Brando wanted the German soldier he plays to have a more humane quality than the book portrayed. 2. Sammy Davis Jr. was introduced to his soon to be wife (May Britt) through Dean. Sammy and May were married eight years and had 3 children. During this time 'The Clan' (Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin) had helped campaign for JFK's Presidency. Sammy was not invited to the inauguration because of his interracial marriage so Dean decided that he would not attend since his friend was not welcome. 3. This is the only film that Brando, Clift and Martin made together - in my opinion - a good one! If you'd like to enjoy Robert Osborne introducing this movie on TCM you can view that on YouTube! THE YOUNG LIONS will be shown at 12:15 a.m. central time. Please watch this film TCM doesn't often show and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

I was curious about the feature films that Dean Martin has appeared in, so I went to IMDB and made a list. It turns out that for almost all of them, Dean had billing as one of the top 3 stars in the film. I then looked to see which of these have been shown on TCM. Here is what I found:
Dean Martin movies shown on TCM (37) (he has top-3 billing)
3 Ring Circus (1954) 4 for Texas (1963) 5 Card Stud (1968) Ada (1961) Airport (1970) Ambushers, The (1967) Artists and Models (1955) (shown 1 time on TCM) At War with the Army (1950) Bandolero! (1968) (shown 1 time on TCM) Bells Are Ringing (1960) Caddy, The (1953) Hollywood or Bust (1956) How to Save a Marriage and Ruin Your Life (1968) Kiss Me, Stupid (1964) Living It Up (1954) Marriage on the Rocks (1965) Mr. Ricco (1975) Murderers' Row (1966) Ocean's Eleven (1960) Pardners (1956) Rio Bravo (1959) Robin and the 7 Hoods (1964) Sailor Beware (1952) Scared Stiff (1953) (shown 1 time on TCM) Sergeants 3 (1962) Silencers, The (1966) Some Came Running (1958) Sons of Katie Elder, The (1965) Stooge, The (1951) Ten Thousand Bedrooms (1957) Texas Across the River (1966) Toys in the Attic (1963) Who Was That Lady? (1960) Who's Been Sleeping in My Bed? (1963) (shown 1 time on TCM) Wrecking Crew, The (1968) You're Never Too Young (1955) Young Lions, The (1958)
Other movies shown on TCM with Dean in the cast (2). You would say these are minor roles.
Pepe (1960) (as himself) What a Way to Go! (1964) (shown 1 time on TCM)
Other Dean movies with a principal role never shown on TCM (14)
All in a Night's Work (1961) Cannonball Run II (1984) Cannonball Run, The (1981) Career (1959) Jumping Jacks (1952) Money from Home (1953) My Friend Irma (1949) My Friend Irma Goes West (1950) Rough Night in Jericho (1967) Showdown (1973) Something Big (1971) Swing Out, Sweet Land (1970) That's My Boy (1951) Who's Got the Action? (1962)
There are just a few other titles (4) that Dean appears in where he is uncredited, so I assume these are minor roles. All have been shown on TCM except for the unfinished film.
Come Blow Your Horn (1963) Something's Got to Give (1962) (unfinished) The Road to Hong Kong (1962) Road to Bali (1952)
TCM has also shown the 2021 'King of Cool' documentary several times, which is Dean's biography. And of course Dean has appeared in many television shows, including his own series, which are not listed here.
I think that covers the feature films. I hope I did not miss anything.

cmovieviewer - All I can say is I COULD'NT HAVE DONE A BETTER JOB!!! I believe on my thread I have in the past discussed some of these films before. I love the way you have categorized them. There are so many fun/facts I could talk about regarding some of these films, that I could literally write a book! - but I won't delve into that much information all at once. Many films on your first list were films that Dean made during his partnership with Jerry Lewis. They made 16 movies together. TCM use to play some of them but for years have not. Not sure why except that as everyone talks about, there might be some kind of licensing thing - I don't know. I have a few favorites out of that short list, like MY FRIEND IRMA 1949, because that was Dean's first film. He's sooo young in that movie! I'm glad you mentioned his work on television. His variety show was amazingly popular. In 1967 he won the Emmy for his show and was actually nominated 4 times! His first love though was singing! I think he had one of the most wonderful voices of the era!!! Anyway, that's probably why he has 3 stars on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame!!! To my knowledge he has only been Star Of The Month once on TCM - in September of 2018. THANK YOU SO MUCH AGAIN FOR ALL THE WONDERFUL INFORMATION YOU POSTED!
