It's a triple bill weekend for Dean this Saturday and Sunday!!! TCM is showing two Dino features on Saturday and one on Sunday!
Saturday's showings are what I'll discuss here. First airing at 12:15 p.m. central time is DEAN MARTIN: KING OF COOL 2021 documentary.
This is a pretty well done presentation of Dean's life. His daughter Deana was one of the people instrumental in getting this project started. It's a condensed look at Dean's fascinating life, although, it leaves out much of the detail. There are some good biographies, which I've talked about before on this thread, that provide some of that wonderful detail - but watch this and get the flavor of the time of entertainment during which Dean lived.
After the documentary, TCM is showing my favorite Dean Martin film - RIO BRAVO 1959.
TCM is showing RIO BRAVO at 2:15 p.m. central time on Saturday. Starring John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson, Angie Dickinson, with Walter Brennan, Ward Bond and Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez. Directed by Howard Hawks.
Dean really wanted this part. After his stage performance in Las Vegas, he took a private plane to meet Howard Hawks. Hawks said that if he wanted the part of Dude that much, he should have it! He didn't regret his decision, although Hawks worked with Dean on the kind of emotion he wanted to see from the struggles his character had. Dean loved making this film - he loved westerns and he and John Wayne became lifelong friends. In 1965 they would make their second western together.
Listen to Dean's smooth voice singing the title song 'Rio Bravo'.
Dino also sings 'My Rifle, My Pony, and Me' in the movie which I adore and is on my playlist! So tune in for a special Saturday afternoon with Dean - I've cleared my calendar!!!

As a post script to this afternoon's showing of RIO BRAVO 1959 - even though I've watched this film many times (you probably would not want to know how many - LOL), one scene always stands out for me. Even though the scene when Dean's character - Dude - shoots a murderer down from the loft in a tavern after seeing his blood drip into a glass is great! - and the ending well orchestrated shoot out scene is so fun to watch - and listening to Dean sing is mesmerizing, it's always the first few minutes of the movie that is the very best!!! In the first couple of minutes Dean conveys the torture his character is going through. There is no dialog here. Dean uses his facial expressions and body language with all the precision of the skilled silent film stars that came before him. He's the first character you see on film and his acting is what pulls you full force into the story.
Howard Hawks' direction had a lot to do with forming the feel of this movie. Another thing that stands out for me is the time spent on watching the relationships between the characters. These relationships are what drives much of the story. Even though I have a list of directors I always like, this is one reason Hawks is one of my favorites. So, well done to Howard Hawks and well done Dean Martin. Another reason I'm so glad these classic films continue to be appreciated!!!

The Sunday half of TCM's Dean Martin weekend, is the movie BELLS ARE RINGING 1960, starring Dean Martin and Judy Holliday, co starring Jean Stapleton and Fred Clark - directed by Vincente Minnelli.
This is the second movie that Vincente Minnelli directed Dean in. Minnelli requested Dean for this part after directing him in SOME CAME RUNNING 1958. This would be Judy Holliday's last film.
I like this story because it is definitely of a time gone by. The time of answering services, telephone operators and telephones (that you dial).
I also love the dresses/outfits that Judy Holliday wears. Walter Plunkett was the costume designer for this film.
It's a fun musical love story - Dean and Judy play their parts perfectly!
This is a song that Minnelli chose to leave out of the film. I think it should have been left in - but that's just my opinion.
Dean and Judy relaxing at the studio.
Dean's relaxing personality worked well with Judy while making this movie. Even though Judy had played this part on stage, she was nervous and did not feel well for times during shooting. Working with Dean helped calm her and put her fears at ease.
So tune in 3:00 p.m. central time Sunday afternoon and listen to some wonderful music and watch Dean and Judy fall in love - that's what I'll be doing!!!

I love BELLS ARE RINGING! It's one of the few 1960's musicals to not be a blockbuster-3+ hour-marathon with an overture, intermission, and exit score.
I also love Judy's dresses in this film. It's a shame they decided to cut "My Guiding Star" from the film. It's a very nice scene, and really, at only less than 2 minutes of screen time, they should have reconsidered that decision.

This month's tune from Dean is 'Kiss', recorded in July 1952 at Capitol Records.
Listen to the way Dino sings it with his easy warm voice.
This song wove it's way into the movie NIAGRA 1953, starring Marilyn Monroe and Joseph Cotten, which TCM showed earlier this month.
