HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Dino Paul Crocetti. Born June 7, 1917. He would be 106 today if he were still with us. His spirit and his talent are still here though!!!

I love this album/CD. Number 19 on the track - love me, my love - is one of my very favorites of Dean's recordings (although I have many favorites). There's such warmth that comes through his voice. Just one of the things that made me fall in love with Dino years ago. Thanks for posting his music.

Well, I've never been in love with Dean, but did think he had a very good singing voice. No matter the song, it sounded so easygoing and natural that it always seemed he wasn't forcing himself to sing and was enjoying the singing so much you couldn't help but feel the joy he was having too.

Sepiatone That easygoing, unforced style came across in his acting too, especially his comedy work, and brought him high-profile roles in comedies with actresses like Judy Holliday, Shirley MacLaine, Lana Turner and Marilyn Monroe, who hand-picked Dean to co-star in her final, unfinished comedy. Dean, Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland were the three who could balance acting, recording and concert careers and shine in all of them.

I agree and you can see his easy going style carry the very light comedy in the movies "Kiss Me Stupid" and "How to Save a Marriage and Ruin Your Life," which co-stars Kim Novak and Stella Stevens respectively.

I don't think the others had near the level of easy going vibe that Dino had. To me, Frank had an underlying my way or the highway aura; Judy a show must go on one; Sammy strove for perfection; Crosby seemed planned & perfectly timed actions. I enjoy all those performers, but Dino always seemed to be the most naturally free and easy in my opinion.

Sepia and I were responding to this comment: "Dean, Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland were the three who could balance acting, recording and concert careers and shine in all of them". I.e., that Sammy Davis Jr and Bing Crosby could also balance acting, recording and concert careers. But as you note; I don't know of another performer from that era that had near the level of that easy going vibe Dino had. While there are others beyond these 5, I see a major drop off, with the only person I can think of being Mitzi Gaynor. But while Gaynor was successful in some recordings for Verve Records, these were records to showcase what she had done in the movies. Thus, while Gaynor shined brightly in acting, dancing, and concerts(her run in Vegas was very successful), her record sales don't come close to what those 5 did.

Dean and Marilyn were friends from early Hollywood years. When Marilyn passed away with only two weeks of shooting left on the film Somethings Got To Give, the studio wanted to replace her with Lee Remick. Not that Dean had anything against Remick but said that he had a contract to film with Marilyn. The movie was later filmed with Doris Day and James Garner - Move Over, Darling - 1963. It was a remake of My Favorite Wife with Cary Grant and Irene Dunne.
Dean and Frank were both talented and good at balancing different areas of entertainment and of course enjoyed working together. Dean and Frank are also part of a group that have 3 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame - one each for movies, television and recording.
Dean enjoyed making films and it was said that most actors and directors who worked with him were enamored by his easygoing relaxed style. John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart became friends with Dean after shooting movies with him, (Rio Bravo 1959, The Sons of Katie Elder 1965 and Bandolero! 1968), and appeared on Dean's long running TV show many times. Vincente Minnelli requested Dean for the 1960 movie Bells are Ringing - after working with him on the 1958 film Some Came Running.
To me, Dean was the whole package: charm, a voice like satin, style, kind, laid back, even tempered and very handsome!
By the way, TCM is playing Bells are Ringing Monday (June 12th)/early Tuesday morning(June 13th) at 2:30a.m.(Central time). Dean will be singing "Just in Time" and I'll be watching!!!

Just a TCM programming note for Dean Martin fans - this Thursday morning at 7:30a.m. (Central Time), Dean Martin: King Of Cool is being aired. It's a well done biography about the life of this talented man.
I've seen others that are good too. I even have a couple on DVD.
Does anyone know if this biography is available for sale anywhere? To my knowledge it's not or at least I can't find it.
TCM plays this once or twice a year. I hope they keep showing it. I'll be starting my day off Thursday enjoying my coffee while watching TCM!

Update on Dean Martin film coming up this week - Ocean's 11 1960 movie.
Of course this is the picture that made the 'Rat Pack' famous because they would film and then perform in the casino at night.
Peter Lawford was the one who bought the rights to the story but Frank Sinatra liked it and kind of took over.
He made sure that his friends Dean and Sammy and their talents were highlighted. Dean and Sammy both have songs in this film.
