Just finished watching SOME CAME RUNNING 1958 on TCM. Each time I see that movie I'm intrigued with something else. I love all of the different relationships shown in this film. Today I paid attention to the niece and her wanting to spread her wings and be independent and not totally following the convention of that time.
Of course I always love to see Dean in his underwear!!! LOL! - and Rosalie has some enjoyable lines in the film - "he keeps his hat on even in bed, so I've heard". I LOVE THAT LINE!!!
Every actor does such a fine job in this film!
The last scene is Dean taking off his hat and then fade to the beautiful landscaping - LOVE!

Quick note - TCM is airing 1960's Ocean's Eleven tomorrow morning 7:45 a.m. central time. Of course this is the movie famous for helping to develop the 'Rat Pack' image. While filming during the day, Dean, Frank and Sammy would take over the Sands Hotel and Casino at night! By this time Dean and Frank were close friends having made Some Came Running together in 1958 and plenty of TV specials which sometimes included one of Dean's favorite golf partners Bing Crosby. Angie Dickinson and Shirley MacLaine, the two honorary female 'Pack' members also join in the fun in this film! If you miss it, TCM is showing it twice in December's schedule.

If you subscribe to DirecTV, this weekend you get the STARTZ WESTERN Channel (538), free. Tomorrow, Saturday, Dean's Western, BANDOLERO! 1968 is on at 6:30 p.m. central time and Sunday early at 2:35 a.m. Also, SHOWDOWN 1973, is being aired at 7:30 a.m. and 5:20 p.m. central times.
BANDOLERO! Pairs Dean with Jimmy Stewart who plays his brother, and Raquel Welch who plays a beautiful hostage. To me, Dean is the most lovable outlaw ever in this movie - as only Dean can be! LOL
SHOWDOWN was Dean's last western and he plays along side Rock Hudson. They are boyhood friends who end up on the opposite side of the law and in love with the same women. This was a bittersweet film for Dean because his own horse - Tops - who Dean had ridden in every movie beginning with Rio Bravo 1959 died during filming. Filming was stopped for two weeks because Dean was upset by the lose of his horse. Dean was an avid horseman and breeder. This movie was shot entirely on location in New Mexico.
If you enjoy westerns these should be on your watchlist!

Bandolero! is in my DVDR collection. I recorded it as a backup copy from the public library's DVD.
I've never seen Showdown. If I ever get the chance I'll add it to my collection.

Yes Kims. In the back of Deana Martin's biography about her father - MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS - Deana shares the recipe that Dean grew up eating, his mother's recipe. Deana talks about how when she was young her Grandmother Angela Crocetti, taught her how to make Pasta Fagioli and she shares that recipe. Also, I have very often ordered it when I'm at a good, well established Italian restaurant. It's delicious! It's very much an Italian peasant dish full of pasta, beans, olive oil, garlic and Romano cheese. It's one of those heart warming, comforting meals. Deana tells a sweet wonderful story in her book about how when Dean was older, in his 70's, one Christmas, she took him some Pasta Fagioli that she made. Deana says that his eyes lit up and he said to her, "It's still warm!" Deana talks about how she somehow knew that was what her Grandmother wanted! Every once in a while after that, Dean would call his daughter and ask if she could make him some more Pasta Fagioli!!!
Another Dean note - TCM has his biography - DEAN MARTIN THE KING OF COOL! - on the TCM library right now until the beginning of January!

LOL! I guess I assume the chef knows what they're doing. 😄 Deana does talk more in depth about it, and very lovingly, in her book. 🍲
I have made Deana's recipe. It works well in a slow cooker. It's one of those recipes that fills the house with a good smell. This is the perfect time of year I get in the mood for that kind of cooking.

Dean Martin, one of the 20th centuries most talented entertainers, died 28 years ago today on Christmas Day.
His talent still continues to bring happiness and inspire many people.
The holidays are filled with his voice and songs.
The lights of Las Vegas were dimmed as he joined the angels singing in heaven.
Love you Dino!
Happy Christmas to everyone!

TCM is celebrating New Year's Eve early morning with the 1960 movie Ocean's 11, the perfect film for the day since the heist takes place on New Year's Eve! Dean sings his fun song - AIN'T THAT A KICK IN THE HEAD - and kisses Shirley MacLaine - or does Shirley kiss him!!! Watch Dean, Frank, Sammy and the guys - along with Angie Dickinson have lots of fun in Vegas! LOL
Happy New Year!

Watched MOONSTRUCK last weekend on TCM. I've seen it before but viewed it differently this time. I remember Robert Osborn talking about this - how you can see the same film at different points in your life and it's effects are different. The scene that did it for me was when Nicholas Cage is telling Cher how horrible love makes a person feel, what agony you're in when you're really in love!!! What a wonderful scene!
Loved Ben's outro about the music in this movie. How at first there was opera music since the movie revolves somewhat around the opera. Then, the music was changed to Dean Martin singing THAT'S AMORE and the audience reaction was totally different!
THAT'S AMORE was one of Dean's hits. According to Jerry Lewis, he commissioned song writers Harry Warren and Jack Brooks to write this song for Dean. Dean sang this in their 1953 film THE CADDY. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song that year. However, SECRET LOVE by Doris Day won. In interviews given by Dean later in his career, he said that was not one of his favorite songs. He thought it was silly - about a pizza pie hitting your eye. LOL But people seem to like the tune! It's been used in several other films.
I do love hearing Dean's voice at the beginning and ending of this movie.

Tomorrow (1-24-24) TCM is showing BELLS ARE RINGING 1960 directed by Vincente Minnelli. Cute Romantic Musical and one of Dean's films TCM seems to have in rotation. Fun to watch telephones and answering services before cell phones and technology!

TCM is playing SOME CAME RUNNING - 1958 film - tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. central time. A good one to watch. This is the first film Dean and Frank made together after their friendship blossomed. Frank had made sure Dean's one man act was well introduced and received. Frank Sinatra and Dean had been introduced to each other earlier in the 1940's - Dean was still working with Jerry Lewis at the time. By the late 1950's when Dean was on his own, Frank helped make sure Dean got the attention he deserved. Frank knew how to blow his own horn whereas Dean was not that kind. After they filmed SOME CAME RUNNING the fun and shenanigans that ensued when the two of them where together was magical. They made 6 movies together and were life long friends. Their female comrade, Shirley MacLaine, had fun along with them.

Another comment about SOME CAME RUNNING since I just finished watching it for like...many times. LOL- Of course I love my Dino, but - Shirley MacLaine is positively so wonderful in this film! One minute I'm laughing watching her drinking and singing with the guys in the band when they're in Terre Haute and then she has me in tears when Frank's character asks her to marry him! She has a way of reaching right through the screen and making you feel what she's feeling! This film was a sample at the beginning of her career and she's done the same thing up till now...and she's still going! What a gem!

This film was a sample at the beginning of her career and she's done the same thing up till now...and she's still going! What a gem! MacLaine's performance is incredible in this one. I haven't seen it that recently, but the scene where she goes to Frank's other girlfriend - the refined teacher - and asks her if she wants Frank is brutally heartbreaking as MacLaine knows she can't better this prettier and smarter woman, but she goes and asks her anyway. It's painfully sad and real as you see MacLaine's heart is just out there.
It's like an instantiation of the lyrics from the song "Jolene:"
I had to have this talk with you My happiness depends on you And whatever you decide to do, Jolene And you could have your choice of men But I could never love again Cause he's the only one for me, Jolene, Jolene Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene Oh, I'm begging of you please don't take my man
