Just a news flash for today. Dean Martin film Marriage On The Rocks is on TCM this afternoon at 5:00p.m. (central time). This 1965 movie was the last major motion picture that Dean and Frank Sinatra made together. They reunited in 1983 for Cannonball Run II with Sammy Davis and Shirley McClaine - mostly to have fun together again! That film starred Dom Deluise and Burt Reynolds.
Marriage On The Rocks also stars Deborah Kerr and a young Nancy Sinatra.
It's a Romantic Comedy that Dean did well with all his charm even though he liked making Westerns the most.
My afternoon will be complete watching Dean!

Dean Martin was a true treasure of a performer. Very nice singer, stupendously funny, and a pretty good actor.
And he was his own man - even Sinatra couldn't intimidate Dean. Sinatra was thought of as the chairman, but Dean was the chairman of himself always.

And I mean "rat" literally. And personally, I preferred Dean's singing to Sinatra's. (flame proof suit already on). Sepiatone

I do too. Dean's singing was more mellifluous.

I of course agree with you all! For me Dean's voice is warm and velvety. It seems to come from his heart. That may just be my imagination because I adore him so much, but I don't think so. I feel that he really found joy in singing. Frank Sinatra knew how to sell himself and Dean didn't spend much time on that. His fans were fans because they liked his talent and I think that's still true even now - all these years after his death. Such a talented man!!!
The next Dean Martin films TCM has coming up will be in August during the Summer Under The Stars Festival - the two that Stella Stevens made with him.

Since my Dino's movies are done for August, in preview, TCM has 4 planned for September! - Rio Bravo 1959, Marriage On The Rocks 1965, Some Came Running 1958 and 1960's Bells Are Ringing.
Also I'd like to add that I'm looking forward to the Hitchcock movies planned in September.

I really wish TCM would show some of his more seldom-seen movies - like Texas Across the River, Rough Night in Jericho, and 5 Card Stud which co-starred Robert Mitchum. I haven't seen these since the 60's. (Well, that's not entirely true - I found a DVD of Rough Night at the library recently and watched it). I remember enjoying all these when I was a movie theater usher back then. There's another western he made that I've never seen called Showdown which co-starred Rock Hudson - I'd love if TCM would run this.

I'm glad you asked about those films. I have all of Dean's movies on DVD except two. Rough Night in Jericho is one of them (even though I've seen most of it). It's the only movie where Dean plays the bad guy - I don't want to see that. LOL
5 Card Stud is good. It's sort of a Western/Mystery.
Showdown is good too. It was Dean's last western. Dean's horse, Tops, died during filming. The shooting was shut down for two weeks. Tops was Dean's own horse. Tops was in every one of Dean's westerns that he made. From Rio Bravo to Showdown. He had a white/cream color marking down the front of his face. He was fed some bad food while on location and Dean was very upset. He loved his horse. Dean loved horses period. He bred horses. That's something that not a lot of people know about him.
Along with those westerns, I wish TCM would play some of Dean's other movies like Career, All In A Night's Work and Airport, just to name a few.

TCM leases Universal films less than those from any other major studio, with the exception of Universal 30s and 40s horror films and Hitchcock films. In the 'western' genre thread TB made this point today: some of the best westerns from the 40s - 60s were from Universal and Republic Pictures, but sadly TCM rarely leases films from these studios, especially westerns. One can find them on GRITT TV and other over-the-air stations, but then there are those stinking commercials.

Interesting information. Still one can hope and wish that TCM will play them. Like you said, they would be more enjoyable without commercials and uncut!

I've stopped watching commercial television almost completely - it's been years since I watched anything except Saturday Night Live. Now I watch everything else either on TCM, DVD or online streaming. No commercials. And almost no screen bugs either - I hate those.

Today at 2:30p.m. central time - TCM is showing SOME CAME RUNNING 1958 film. This is the first film that Dean and Frank made together even though they had known each other since 1943. It's said that this is the film that cemented the friendship that they would share the rest of their lives. The camaraderie/respect they developed for each other would be evident in their future stage, film and concert performances.
Director Vincente Minnelli also developed respect for Dean's professionalism during filming. So much so, that when he directed BELLS ARE RINGING in 1960, he requested Dean for the part of Jeffery Moss.
Enjoy viewing - I always do!

Tomorrow at 2:45 p.m. central time, TCM will be showing BELLS ARE RINGING 1960 film starring Dean Martin and Judy Holliday and directed by Vincente Minnelli. Minnelli had directed Dean in Some Came Running in 1958 and requested Dean play Jeffrey Moss in this movie because he liked Dean's professionalism. According to Bernard and Elliot Thorpe in their book Dean Martin Recollections (Dean Martin Association) - Judy and Dean enjoyed working together on this film. Judy's health was not good on some days and Dean's calm patient manner helped provide her with the self-confidence she needed. Sadly, this was her last film. She passed away in 1965. I liked her. She was so cute, she made the roles she played so fun to watch.
This is one of my favorite Dean musicals and last Dean Martin movie for September. He sings Just In Time with his usual charm, and he and Judy dance so sweetly together! It's such old Hollywood to me - Enjoyable!
