I saw THE NUTTY PROFESSOR first run in a theater. I had a weird idea that persists: when Jerry becomes joe cool, I thought Jerry must want to be Dean. Maybe it's not too far fetched, but I don't know Jerry to come to the conclusion and I was only 9 at the time.

kims - later this week I will post on the thread 'Classic Duo' about the 10 years Dean and Jerry worked together. This information may help. Until then I can recommend reading the biography 'Dean And Me: A Love Story' by James Kaplan and Jerry Lewis. .

The fourth of Dean's movies on the SUTS schedule for August 17th is YOU'RE NEVER TOO YOUNG 1955. It's a musical comedy starring Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis and a remake of THE MAJOR AND THE MINOR 1942.
Diana Lynn (who played in three Martin and Lewis films), Nina Foch and Raymond Burr play along side the guys in this romp.
Norman Taurog directed and Sidney Sheldon wrote the screenplay.
YOU'RE NEVER TOO YOUNG trailer
Dean entertained with his singing - as usual
Dean Martin singing 'Simpatico' 1955
Dean Martin singing - 'Love Is All That Matters' 1955
There are some pretty funny moments.
By this point Dean wanted out of the partnership and approached Paramount in 1954 about breaking his contract. One reason he wanted to take his career in a solo direction was the kind of parts he was always given to play - he wanted more challenging and dramatic roles and he didn't feel he would ever get that at Paramount. The studio wanted to keep Dean and Jerry in the same type of formula film. Why not? - It was working! Martin and Lewis pictures were a huge box office draw. Paramount was making money hand over fist with these two! They weren't about to let the bank close! So they didn't want to let Dean out of his contract. Dean felt defeated at that point because to break his contract would prove to be absolutely too expensive and have too big of an effect on his career. He and Jerry's relationship was no longer a personal one - as compare to earlier, for example 1949 when Jerry was best man at Dean and Jeanne's wedding. The two only saw each other at the studio now. When you watch this movie Dean and Jerry carried on very professionally and did their jobs. They only made three films after this and then Dean approached the heads of Paramount studios once again and demanded out. Their last film is HOLLYWOOD OR BUST 1956.
Even though I prefer the films Dean made during his solo career, the Martin and Lewis films are movie history - and I do like a few of them. This one will provide you with song and laughs and entertainment.
I'll be watching all day Saturday. It's been a long time since TCM has played these movies.
In the beginning - Dean and Jerry had something very special. I like Jerry because there was a time that he and Dean were close friends - so Dean liked Jerry. Let his star shine bright for 24 hours this Saturday.

Finally, the last Martin and Lewis movie on Saturday's TCM schedule is THE CADDY 1953.
This is probable the most well known of all 16 movies Dean and Jerry made together. It's another musical comedy directed by Norman Taurog.
Along with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis is Donna Reed and Barbara Bates co starring in THE CADDY.
This film also introduced Dean's hit song to the world - 'That's Amore'.
Dino singing 'That's Amore'.
There were cameo appearances by many popular pro golfers of the era.
The story revolves around Joe Anthony (Dean) and Harvey Miller (Jerry), finding their natural strengths and professions.
Dean and Jerry singing 'What Wouldcha Do Without Me'.
Again, lots of laughs, music and the magic that happened when Dean and Jerry where at their best. It's what made them the most popular comedy duo and highest paid act in the country in the early 1950's.
TCM's star under the Summer sun on Saturday, August 17th is Jerry Lewis - shine on!

Happy Birthday to Deana Martin today - born August 19, 1948. Dean had 7 children and Deana is his 'middle child'.
Deana appeared on her father's variety show many times - this was a first time duet.
In 2013 Deana recorded this duet with her father posthumously - the song 'True Love'. It's on her album 'Destination Moon'.
This is Dean's original recording of 'True Love' from his album -'This Time I'm Swingin'! recorded at Capitol Records in 1960.
Happy Birthday Deana!

Tonight, or tomorrow morning early at 2:30 a.m. central time, TCM is showing ROBIN AND THE 7 HOODS 1964. One of three Dean Martin movies scheduled for the month of September.
It is part of an evening of memorial tribute films to Barbara Rush. This was the second time that Barbara Rush would star with Dean - the first was in THE YOUNG LIONS 1958.
I've talked about this film before on my thread - it seems to be one that TCM plays every once in a while, maybe because it's a Warner Bros. film.
Anyway, it's always fun to watch. There are some good music and dance numbers, and of course Dean!
So tune in tonight when TCM pays tribute to Barbara Rush and of course to watch my favorite guy with me!

I'm very fond of 7 Hoods. Always thought Barbara's costumes weren't fitted quite right. BunnyWhit, what's your take? I rarely notice such things, so something's got to be off.

I hadn't seen the film in some time, DianedeBuda, so I skipped through it this afternoon. I entered my thoughts on Barbara Rush's costumes in the "Is That What You're Wearing?" thread here.

Saturday afternoon, at 2:30 p.m. central time, TCM will be showing 4 FOR TEXAS 1963. This is the second movie of Dean's on the September schedule.
This story revolves around two Texan businessmen who are rivals - guess who - that's right, Dean Martin and his pallie Frank Sinatra. They compete with each other until they realize by working together against the real bad guy it's better for them and the town. Nothing earth shattering in the plot line - just a lot of fun as usual when Dean and Frank made a movie together in the early 60's.
The two beauties playing opposite the guys are Anita Ekberg (who played with Dean in two films in the 50's) and Ursula Andress. Their goal is to get their man - and they do in the end!
I enjoy Ursula and Dean together in this one. They seem to have a nice easy chemistry and actually remained friends.
So watch to see how much fun these 4 can have in Texas!
Even though I've seen this movie many times - I'll always tune in again to see Dean have fun!

It's been awhile since I've seen 4 FOR TEXAS. The film used to air on the Encore Westerns Channel, that's where I first glimpsed it. Fun escapist fare with a western theme.

Dean's song for September is Besame Mucho which he recorded at Reprise Records in August of 1964 as part of his 'Dino Latino' album, (information from Bernard and Elliot Thorpe's book - 'Dean Martin Recollections').
I think this is one of his most sensuous songs.
This is a 'bolero' song written in the 1930's by Consuelo Velazquez.
I'm dedicating this song to my niece who is getting married the last weekend of this month. A few days before her wedding I'll be sharing another of Dean's songs about love.

Topbilled - Thanks for your good wishes for my niece's wedding. It's going to be a very happy celebration that our whole family is looking forward to. Her fiance' is a wonderful man - so I will be gaining another wonderful nephew! My brother and I are the only two and we're very close. I've never had children of my own - his two children, my niece and nephew, have seemed like mine ever since they were born. Emily, my niece, has grown up listening to Dean Martin and even now as an adult will sit down and watch one of his movies with me. My whole family knows how I adore Dino. To answer if Emily is a fan of Dean Martin music - I would say she is, although not as much as me. She's 32 years old and listens to the average music that her generation listens to. She's grown up appreciating Dean and music from his era because of her exposure to it through me and her grandparents when they were alive.
Safe to say Dean will be singing a song or two on September 28th.
