Watched, Rough Night in Jericho, the only film in which Dean Martin portrayed the villain. Watching Dean beat the crap out of Jean Simmons wasn't a lot of fun.

It wasn't any fun for Dean either, jamesjazzguitar. That's why that was the only time he played the bad guy.
Dean loved to make Westerns and he loved to watch them. In his days with Frank Sinatra - he made Westerns where, basically, the two pallies had fun and made a movie at the same time. A few of them were Westerns and they're fun to watch. In the last part of his film career, he became more serious about them and wanted to stretch his characters. Alex Flood was probably too far of a stretch for Dean. After ROUGH NIGHT IN JERICHO 1967, he made BANDOLERO! 1968, 5 CARD STUD 1968 and SHOWDOWN 1973, just to name a few. In these movies Dean played more dramatic characters but not the bad guy.
His wife Jeanne would often say that Dean was no disciplinarian. His children agreed and often talked about that, especially when they were adults remembering their father.
Often Dean would deescalate situations he and Frank would find themselves in. Frank, unlike Dean, was known to have a bit of a hotter temper.
Dean didn't like confrontation and stayed out of it. Those who worked with him, like Greg Garrison producer of The Dean Martin Show, said that he was actually kind of quiet and shy.
Interestingly, I myself, have only watched that film once. It's hard for me to see Dean as the bad guy too.

I've been wanting to share Dean's wonderful voice on my thread but my technology skills have been holding me back - so I decided to try.
I don't know if it will work, so bear with me. I want to share Dean's most memorable song - Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime. I thought I'd start with this song because Dean was so proud of it. He even sent his pallie Elvis a note about it! It's the song that knocked the Beatles off the number one spot on the charts in August of 1964 and stayed there for eight weeks. It became Dean's theme song when he had his television show -and his children knew how special this song was to Dean so they had it engraved on his tombstone. This is a video of Dean singing that song on a Bob Hope TV special in 1964. If I can do this thing - I'll be sharing Dean's voice and history around once a month.

I've been looking around for TV performances by Juliet Prowse and ended up posting something elsewhere from a Tom Jones special, but I saved this one especially for you, christine. Great chemistry. Dean was so relaxed and spontaneous that it took a special kind of person to really keep up with him and I think Juliet managed beautifully. She was also Rat Pack-affiliated, so I imagine that helped.

Thank you I Love Melvin! Yes, Juliet hung out with the rat pack for a while - she dated Frank Sinatra for a short time. Once again, I believe that's why entertainers who worked with Dean always liked and respected him - he made them feel at ease and respected their talents! Thanks again for posting this - they are wonderful together!

I want to share some follow-up history about Dean's hit song 'Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime'.
Dean originally recorded this song on his 'Dream With Dean' 1964 album at Reprise Records. This recording was a slower version of the hit song people now associate with Dean. This became Dean's first gold album and in my opinion his best! This album allows the listener to hear and relish the richness of his baritone voice. It was recorded with only 4 instruments - Ken Lane, who wrote the song was on piano, Irv Cottier on drums, Red Mitchell on bass and Barney Kessel on guitar. The first 11 tracks were songs already agreed upon but there was the 12th track undecided. Ken played it for Jeanne (Dean's wife) and Dean. Jeanne told Dean she liked it - that was good enough for Dean. So it became the last track on the album. When the album was released in August of 1964, that song immediately became popular and requested on the radio.
Immediately, another album was made with a faster version (the one that went to number one).
This is the original version from the 'Dream With Dean' album.
If you've never listened to this album before, I hope this encourages you to take a listen.
One of the reasons I believe this is such a great album is because it was close to the way Dean loved to sing. He started out singing in lounges. Even in Vegas, after the last of his stage shows for the night, it was said that he would go down into the lounges were the people were and sing (for free) with the small lounge bands.

Remembering Bob Newhart - who Dean loved to work with and was on Dean's variety show many times!

TCM is playing SOME CAME RUNNING 1958 in a couple of hours - 1:00 p.m. central (sorry about the late posting but I've been entertaining out of town guests this weekend). Vincente Minnelli directs Dean Martin, Shirley MacLaine and Frank Sinatra in this drama about an Army veteran returning home. This is the first time Minnelli directs Dean but again in 1960 when he requests Dean for the roll in BELLS ARE RINGING. Martha Hyer, Arthur Kennedy and Larry Gates also with good performances. This film was shot in Indiana - Madison. The movie received several OSCAR nominations - 5 all together. Elmer Bernstein won a Golden Globe for the music.
I'll be watching along with my visiting cousins from Georgia - we're having an afternoon Dean party!!! Enjoy.

It's an excellent and moving movie. Dean is great, as is Sinatra. But watch for the scene in the schoolroom where Shirley MacLaine pleads with Martha Hyer not to take Sinatra from her (it's the song "Jolene" come to life). It's an amazing bit of writing and acting - incredibly real and heartbreaking.

Thanks kims - I own all of the available DVD'S of The Dean Martin Variety Show. These shows are full of wonderful entertainment and memories. All the popular entertainers of that era wanted to be on Dean's show. I know the dance routine you're sharing - great. If you ever have a chance watch the first of this collection. You'll have such a good time and realize what kind of entertainment there was. Dean also had a way of respecting other's talents and enjoying them. I think that's why people loved to watch his show and why it was on the air for 9 years!
