Yes, she's far more afraid of her father than she is of Emile.

Another dancing scene, this time with Mr. Minnoch as Emile looks on.

"Heaven has no rage like love to hate turned, nor hell a fury like a̵ ̵w̵o̵m̵a̵n̵ a man named Emile scorned."

A touch of The Heiress there with that marriage realization....for money not love. Not sure how often such a shortcut to the top worked back then. Probably many arsenic accidents and people disappearing to the colonies.
I need to seek out other works with M. Desnitsky. He is quite charming.
Minnoch reminds me of Derek from Coronation Street.

If you get a chance, check out "Ivy," which we watched on Sunday Live! a few weeks ago - I think you'd enjoy it.

Maybe if the parents hadn't been out all those evenings, Emile wouldn't have spent so much time there at the house.

Yes! I wouldn't have thought of it, but now that you mention it that entire scene with Emile, his hat, and gloves reminded me of the way the Montgomery Clift's character loved the trappings of wealth so much.

Maybe if the parents hadn't been out all those evenings, Emile wouldn't have spent so much time there at the house. I found that really strange but maybe there was enormous trust? There were usually so many busy bodies around that it wouldn't have gone without notice or tittle tattle. I believe the real family shared the house with with another branch of the family so creeping would have been quite a magic trick.

The flaw in Ann Todd's plan is that nobody is buying that she needs anything for her beautiful skin.

Mrs. Jenkins love of Emile is a brilliant touch and keeps me from thinking he is 100% calculating cad.

Mrs. Jenkins love of Emile is a brilliant touch and keeps me from thinking he is 100% calculating cad. I agree, but what's odd is that wasn't she giving him a hard time about the rent at the start of the movie?

Yes and no - not sure how many lodgers were allowed to coast for 3 weeks of rent owing.
But then maybe she is under his spell also (although she seems pretty practical and sensible from what little we see of her).
I also love Elizabeth Sellars as Christina Hackett. No small parts - just perfection. Great somewhat sidekick in crime like Lizzie Borden and house maid maggie.

Interestingly, Elizabeth Montgomery, who played Lizzie in a well-known 1975 TV movie, also starred in BLACK WIDOW MURDERS (1993) about a woman who murdered her husband and lover by arsenic poisoning.
