I first read Madeleine's story in a novel by Norah Lofts, "Lovers All Untrue." It's terrifying when you think of everything a young girl risked back then. The cad!

I was thinking a similar thought. Heck, Bette Davis was one year younger than Todd when she made "All About Eve" (coincidentally, the same year). I'd buy Todd as being in her early 30s here. Are you saying Bette looked older than her actual age? I was really thinking of the comparison that Todd is a year older but looks a good decade younger than Davis in 1950. I do think in "All About Eve," Davis is 42 and looks mid 40s, so maybe a touch older than her age.

Father is very strict.
Poor Emile will never get a proper introduction to Mr. Smith.

"Dance with me, Emile."
Translation: "Let me slum with you, Emile."

I never even thought about such things when I first watched vintage movies. But now I ponder it often - considered property, with little education, no vote, no say, no choice, no money. Not sure where my moral compass would have or could have pointed under such circumstances.

The dancer extras were really getting into that dance scene.

It is a pretty scene though, Ann with her hair finally loose and her happy dancing.

This was a pre-deodorant, pre-shower-every-day world, that Scottish dancehall had to be ripe.

Such Scottish dancehall scenes always make me think of Queen Victoria always wanting to let loose and cut a rug.
BRING HIM TO THE BOIL!? Yikes.

"Bring him to the boil." LOL Line of the movie so far. She (in her own quiet way) flung that one in her father's face. So good.

Emile will never marry Madeleine. He's living in a fool's paradise.
