Uncle Samson carks it at the 1 hour and 5 minute mark. I suppose something dramatic had to happen...but gee, I liked the old coot.
Marjorie as torn up about Uncle's death as she is about whether or not it is right to be in love with Noel. Life is not easy for this girl.
Martin Balsam on the scene pronouncing Samson dead.
"Come back...come back," she mourns tearfully.

The script is going downhill fast. Poor Kelly.

The bluescreen effect is awful! For Hunter College? Couldn't they find an old building in Pasadena? Midtown Manhattan by car is worse. But that really looks like Central Park.

Brother shows up for Marjorie's graduation. First time we've seen him since the bar mitzvah.
Mother is trying to push Marjorie on the doctor (Martin Balsam). Mother just won't give up.
Marjorie takes a ride with the doctor, but then bumps into Noel. Noel is now working a traditional job...trying to be the type of guy that will earn mother's approval?
What does this story say about Jewish upward mobility???

Well, Arthur Miller wore glasses and he got Marilyn.

Children ride me in Central Park for a dime?

The script is going downhill fast. Poor Kelly. The movie was a hit with audiences...probably most of them had read the book.
I think Natalie's hair is too dark in these post-graduation scenes. It makes the whiteness of her face look a bit ghoulish. Why couldn't they have had her with auburn coloring?
So is she going to marry David the doctor? He's a real drip.

Well, Arthur Miller wore glasses and he got Marilyn. My favorites. Marilyn wore glasses, too.

Thankfully she just dumped the doctor dude.
Now she wants Noel again. How shocking, not. LOL

Mother doesn't like being told Noel is going to be her son-in-law. But she's trying to be nice about it.
Mother: "Have him over for Passover supper." Marjorie: "He doesn't believe in those things." Mother: "He doesn't believe in those things?" Okay, Mother is back to being a witch. LOL
Uncle Samson's chair is at the table with a pillow in his place. Very touching.
After the meal, Noel says he was deeply disturbed...realizing he was lacking family and tradition all these years, the things he had been ridiculing.

Dude's deeply neurotic. Didn't believe that "things I've been missing out on all my life" speech to Wood for a second. Doesn't really work dramatically, either. He seemed almost revolted at the dinner table.

Wally's play premieres and is a hit. He has a girlfriend named Marjorie...what's the likelihood of that?
Wally has new glasses.
How come Marsha was not at the premiere? Where did she disappear to?
Noel is jealous of Wally's success. But Marjorie still believes in Noel. "I don't care what you do...as long as you don't stop loving me."
Did Gene Kelly ever write about working with Natalie Wood? Or discuss her in any interviews later? I'd like to know what he thought about this experience.

Funny to see the future Morticia Addams and the future Maytag repairman in the same scene.
Note the black-and-white picture of the 59th Street Bridge showing throw the "window" of the apartment for Marsha's wedding reception. Would a color pic really have cost that much more?
Separately, I love these over-the-top '50s movie soap operas even if they are, often, cheesy.
