Uncle Samson shows up on a bus...he's going to work at the resort. Uncle is going to keep an eye on Marjorie for mother? LOL
I didn't realize how tall Carolyn Jones is.
Marjorie blows her big chance to be in a Noel Airman show...she's too young and wholesome for the skit...? Okay. Back to sweeping floors and painting scenery.
Oh...their first kiss...that's interesting. Now an invitation to lunch. If mother only knew what was happening!
Marsha: "Marjorie, how did you do it?" Marjorie: "Do what?" Marsha: "Harpoon Moby Dick!"
Dialogue now references sex. For a 1958 film made during the production code era, we are pushing the boundaries with the content.
Martin Balsam? Wow, is he young! In a small role at the resort.

Love Jones calling Kelly Moby Dick! I was thinking of age not sex, TB. But yeah, it was racy for '58.

Where were these resort scenes filmed? The scenery is gorgeous.
I always think about how the sun shines and the wind blows, and these people are experiencing something in nature at a time before I was born. And now these people are all dead. But we still have this evidence of a time and place that existed with these people. Sounds corny and morbid, I know!
Why did Natalie Wood have to die so tragically? What a wonderful spirit she was. She deserved to live a long life.
So Marjorie takes Morningstar as her stage name, per Noel's suggestion. The character's last name is Morgenstern, which is German for morning star.
"I always think about how the sun shines and the wind blows, and these people are experiencing something in nature at a time before I was born. And now these people are all dead. But we still have this evidence of a time and place that existed with these people. Sounds corny and morbid, I know!"
Not corny or morbid. This is part of what gets to me about old movies - it's the closest we can get to time travel.

Nice scene with Uncle Samson and Noel. Where's Marjorie, is she running late. Uncle Samson: "She'll be here, she's in love."
She finally shows up as Uncle Samson leaves. Champagne awaits her. Is she going to lose her virginity to Noel here tonight? She's nervous. Another kiss. "No Marjorie...this was a mistake. No time for another Shirley." A trade name for a respectable middle class girl who likes to play it worldly.
He has no desire to marry a girl like her. She runs out on to the porch, in tears. Her acting is wonderful in this scene.
I think the age difference works, because it makes him seem more pathetic, needing girls her age to worship and idolize him.

OMG, that jacket!! Nice dialogue, tho. But Kelly looks so '50s / Rat-Pack-like cool in his cardigan.

Kelly's really giving Wood a hard time. Kinda rough. The thing you'd tell a shrink not a young ingenue.

Uh oh, mother and father arrive for the big show. Can't wait to see Claire Trevor acting in a scene with Gene Kelly.
What a hot little dance number...Natalie in those leotards. She should have made more movies like this.
She's all grown up now. "We might as well face it mom, I've gone to the dogs." LOL
Okay, he's coming over to the table now. Boy, could Claire Trevor be any more patronizing? She is stealing this film left right and center. What a shrew of a mother.
"A-I-R-M-A-N? Oh, I know an Ehrman, E-H-R-M-A-N." Turns out the one she knows is Noel's father, a respected Jewish judge.
This is not your typical meet-the-folks scene. "Mother what is all this?"
"Forgive me for asking, Mr. Airman, but how old are you?" "I'm 33."

Claire Trevor is completely dominating this resort dining hall scene. I love it.

How did no one spit his/her drink out on that one?
Spot on call - Trevor is on fire.

Ouch, Noel just told Marjorie she is like her mother. That seems uncalled for! LOL
A Mexican dance number with Jewish Uncle Samson dressed as a matador? Ed Wynn certainly will do anything for a laugh.
This number is a bit long...but at least it gave Wynn something to do and he earned his pay for this movie.

Wally has it bad for Marjorie. But he is no Noel Airman. Guess he'll have to wait to get her on the rebound, as he will clearly be a second choice.
Did they really have to put Marty Milner in those glasses to tell us he's a smart playwright? What a cliche.
Uncle Samson wants to dance with Marjorie. What a sweet moment, until Uncle starts experiencing some pains.
Oh no..is he going to die?

The bluescreen background (or was it green?) doesn't really work. Glad to be back "indoors". Natalie is ravishing in that pink dress.

A misconception. None of my favorites wore glasses.
