Well, when my hair was that long it did too eventually get to be a bit much for me. My wife liked it though.

I was watching the 1949 movie "Impact" yesterday with Ella Raines (sigh) and Brian Donlevy and realized classic Hollywood's two most-striking widow's peak were in the same movie. It was hard to find a good picture of the two together with their widow's peaks in full flourish, but this one isn't bad:

Given both the pronounced widow's peak spearheading a full hairline and looking something of a male equivalent to Ella Raines, Fading Fast, I'm surprised to be able to offer up Robert Taylor by this time: (It took the proverbial last ounce of my willpower to restrain from including a non-cropped version of the above photo. )

I'm embarrassed I didn't think of his on my own.

Oh thank you, NoShear ! This is a great idea for a thread. I never get tired of all the fabulous hairdos in the classic films, and yes Norma Shearer's hair always flew out the side of her head in tiny waves like a wild extension of her personality!! Here's the gorgeous Maude Fealy. One of my favorites.

On TCM right now is "King of the Underworld" with Kay Francis in the female lead.
I'm just going to say it knowing I'm going to be crucified, as a body of follicle work in movies, Kay Francis has the ugliest head of hair of any major female star ever. Yes, there's plenty of it, but that's not an asset in her case.

Did she decide the hair style? I wonder if the studio's hair stylists or the director decide. I saw a picture years ago of Deborah Kerr standing in front of a big board with about twelve long wigs of different shades of red hair for whoever to decide her hair color for whatever film.
Maybe Francis had the clout to decide her hairstyle-but geez, to so consistently pick such crazy do's for her.

For late 1970s hair, you have to love Michael Douglas and Genevieve Bujold in Coma (comments on the movie here: "Coma").
It's long and layered, but you can feel the 1980s less-long and more-controlled style coming into being.
For my money, the nod goes to Douglas whose hair has a bit more of a natural look than Bujold's, whose hair shows some control issues in the top pic.
In the last pic, Bujold, after realizing she can't compete with Douglas' mane, decides to no longer play the game.

Warren Beatty's hair was also a good way to track the transition from 1970's to 1980's. From super blown-out in The Parallax View (1974).... ...to more controlled in Heaven Can Wait (1978)... ....to even more scaled back in Ishtar (1987).

"Control Issues" -- This made me snort. These probably were actually the words I was looking for as a teen everytime I threw my brush in the sink and screamed, "What the hell is the matter with this hair!"
