Oh thank you, NoShear ! This is a great idea for a thread. I never get tired of all the fabulous hairdos in the classic films, and yes Norma Shearer's hair always flew out the side of her head in tiny waves like a wild extension of her personality!! Here's the gorgeous Maude Fealy. One of my favorites.
Hey, you changed your 'do again, Andrea Doria! Your previous was a pretty short stay for such a pretty one.

Babs, pass this note to Tuffen: ^ Sally Gosselin

Babs, pass this note to Tuffen: ^ Sally Gosselin I love "To Sir with Love," and watched it on mute for a while Monday night as I also did some work. It struck me how some of the women's hair styles were insanely dated and some could almost work today. You notice these things more when you watch a movie on mute.
Insanely dated (including the black helmet haired girl on the left):
Could almost work today (and what a cute woman):

Fading Fast, of Mark Thackeray (read: British Guiana) and you, I thought of you with the British Commonwealth brigade berets while watching Clarence, the Cross-eyed Lion this week: Back "TO SIR, WITH LOVE"... I realize it reads pathetic, Fading Fast, but I always wish I was in Sir's class: May I have this next dance, Miss Tuffen?

Heck, I tear up every time with Poitier when they give him the gift at the end.
The crazy thing is I think he should have then left and taken the engineering job. It was a walk-off grand slam in the World Series he just hit. He'll never have a better year if he teaches for forty more. Take the "W" and move on to engineering with your one year of teaching being a wonderful memory. Oh, and ask adorable Ms. Kendal to marry you (it's a guaranteed "yes") before you leave.

Another personal favorite head of hair is on Ella Raines, who also sports one of the greatest widow peaks of all time.
Darn, Fading Fast, you'd previously posted: Oh, well: Merry Christmas!!

Jennifer Aniston's red carpet 'do for yesterday's GOLDEN GLOBES is being described as an updated version of The Rachel, but I think it looked a bit blown out to draw much similarity:

Jennifer Aniston's red carpet 'do for yesterday's GOLDEN GLOBES is being described as an updated version of The Rachel, but I think it looked a bit blown out to draw much similarity: I'm with you, I just see, at most, an echo of the earlier style.
When that show came out, I was out of college a few years, living and working in New York City and the same age as the actors. While the show was exaggerated and often silly, as TV sitcoms are, my friends and I did see some elements of our lives in the show. It was a heavily discussed "water cooler" show back then. And, yes, several women got "Rachael" cuts.

Myself, I relate to the series from my San Fernando Valley roots. The coffee bean for F*R*I*E*N*D*S was the InSoMniA CAFE in Sherman Oaks - long gone now:

Jennifer Aniston's red carpet 'do for yesterday's GOLDEN GLOBES is being described as an updated version of The Rachel, but I think it looked a bit blown out to draw much similarity: I agree, NoShear. This modern style also looks to me as if it's a bit less layered, or at least in longer layers.
The made-by-TV craze of The Rachel brought to mind a couple other dos made popular by television actresses: Farah Fawcett with her variety of curled feather cuts,
and Loni Anderson with her feathered helmet.
My mother always wanted Stephanie Powers' Hart to Hart hair. Oh, how that was never, EVER going to happen!

⇧ I was in middle school when Farah's do went the 1970s equivalent of viral with many girls mimicking it.

In fairness to your mother, BunnyWhit, she presumably didn't have an entire aesthetic crew behind her in the chair. It makes me wonder what her daughter was stylin' at that time...
