Or nicely rehearsed. Not enough surprise at realizing his childhood sweetheart is suddenly in front of him for me. Harding was good, though. Good “forget all about him” confrontation scene but played and captured with too heavy a hand. Doesn’t need this dirge-like heaviness to be effective, imo. Just more frank honesty. I agree based on the way we do movies and how they did most movies in the 1930s, but I think Hathaway was directing this with a very 19th century, Romantic Era sensitivity.

She is now visiting him in dreams, after his being abused in prison. Telling him he's free. "You're free, Peter."
Textbook example of melodrama.

I forgot that the trial was depicted as a flashback. Interesting narrative choice. I don't think it added anything versus a linear telling.

Spiritualism is a big part of Romanticism.

And the music is completely unnecessary. I'm starting to agree with your comments, Ando.
The cut down version I saw before was better in some ways. In it we could surmise a lot of things that are a little over stated here.
I usually don't like fantasy or anything supernatural, but I make an exception in this because Ann Harding is so ethereal, and her voice that Facing Fast mentioned, makes it all work for me.

This is a film I'd like to see on the big screen inside a theater.

This joint dream sequence is incredible.
"You can never really imprison me if I have my independent thoughts, my dreams, my memories."
A touch of Orwell.
And now the thunder and rock slide - what the hey? A metaphor for their earthly struggles?

In many ways this is an emotional movie to watch. Emotionally effective.

Enjoyable film, a Romantic Era novel on screen.
Very good choice.

Gary Cooper died in 1961 from cancer. Ann Harding died in 1981 from undisclosed causes.
