I can see why (director) Hathaway and Coop had success with Westerns. This one needs a lighter, more adroit touch.

They taught actors posture in those days. Yes, when he walked down that hall, I tossed James Mason out and decided on Coop!
Ando Is right, Gary Cooper himself thought he was wrong for the roll, but I think he's supposed to have some rough edges for a gentleman. You'll have to get in line behind my girlfriend as she had dibs on Cooper while you were dallying with Mason.

They had the same dream. Are they mystics?

John Halliday was a good character actor who is often overlooked by film historians.
Agreed. He was quite popular in the 30s.

But don’t get me wrong, Coop was a beautiful man, just not in a period romance kind of way. Not enough inner demons for the baroque environs.
Harding, clearly the second billing star, is a good sport, though.

The parallels to the "Fountainhead" are amazing. Cooper covets his boss' wife in "The Fountainhead" too.

The dinner scene where they realize they were childhood sweethearts, brings tears to my eyes.
So nicely performed.

Ann Harding on the bed is playing the Dominique bed crying scene from "The Fountainhead."
In that movie, though, Coop "took" her then.

Sharing of dreams - more Romantic Era stuff.
A 19th century audience would have deeply understood this movie.

Or nicely rehearsed. Not enough surprise at realizing his childhood sweetheart is suddenly in front of him for me. Harding was good, though.
Good “forget all about him” confrontation scene but played and captured with too heavy a hand. Doesn’t need this dirge-like heaviness to be effective, imo. Just more frank honesty.

And the music is completely unnecessary.

In this publicity shot they are very happy. But in the story, there isn't much chance for them to obtain happiness together.

I forgot that the trial was depicted as a flashback. Interesting narrative choice.
