On the opposite side of the comedy coin is horror and suspense. Now I usually don't go in for horror too much, however, this is one that I have to post as an October/Halloween movie.
This film brings back memories of my High School years (a long time ago - LOL). On a Friday after school - the English teachers sponsored a movie night highlighting one of Edgar Allan Poe's works - HOUSE OF USHER 1960 (also known as THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER). I have never been so scarred!!! - It's a good thing my friends sat next to me and I had popcorn in front of me!
I think everyone should experience this film if you want to be frightened!
Starring the king of fright - Vincent Price, and co-starring Myrna Fahey and Mark Damon.
Make your popcorn before you watch!!!

Just watched another Halloween comedy, Disney's BLACKBEARD'S GHOST
It brings together Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette again, and also features Elsa Lanchester, but this movie is all about Peter Ustinov (one of my all time favorites!)
Plus I would give anything to stay in this inn made of pieces of pirate ships:

Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971) is another fine fall film from Disney.

My favorite haunted house is from Disney, THE HAUNTED MANSION 2003 - starring Eddie Murphy, Marsha Thomason, Terence Stamp and Nathaniel Parker. I have to mention the two adorable kids that played Megan and Michael Evers - Aree Davis and Marc Jefferies!
This movie reminds me of my favorite ride at Disney's Magic Kingdom - The Haunted Mansion ride!

Another Halloween staple -- Who ya gonna call? Good one, LonesomePolecat! I quote this film all the time; when I say, "Choose the form of the Destructor," The Hubbs knows I mean "what do you want for dinner!"

Another ghostly fun film is DEATH BECOMES HER 1992, starring Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn, Bruce Willis and Isabella Rossellini.
Perfect to watch on an October evening!

Another great horror film I watch every Halloween is POLTERGEIST
My favorite character in the whole movie is the clarevoyant played by Zelda Rubenstein -- she steals the whole movie

Halloween is also a good time for murder mysteries, or parodies of murder mysteries like CLUE and MURDER BY DEATH

1999 and thereabouts is probably my favorite film period this side of circa 1974 At least two of '99's films fall nicely in this thread: Said to have made its United States debuts at a pair of film festivals 25 years ago this month - Set in October of 1994 -

A suspenseful thriller I like for October/Halloween is WHEN A STRANGER CALLS 1979, starring Charles Durning, Carol Kane and Colleen Dewhurst.
The remake from 2006 is very good too!
Either way - don't watch alone!

I knowthe Universal Horror monster movies are the most famous, but I have to mention the Hammer Horror collection starring The Great Christopher Lee.
I love him as Dracula and Frankenstein, but I have to say the Hammer "Mummy" film is my fav Mummy film of all:
