We end W. Somerset Maugham month with "The Moon and Sixpence." A story based on the life of Gauguin an artist whose love of beauty overrides all else. Starring George Sanders, Herbert Marshall and Doris Dudley. 1942

Some critics consider this to be George Sanders' best performance.
Herbert Marshall had previously appeared in THE PAINTED VEIL (which we watched two weeks ago). In THE MOON AND SIXPENCE he is playing a fictionalized version of Maugham. And in 1946 he'd appear in Fox's adaptation of THE RAZOR'S EDGE, that time playing Maugham directly.

I haven't seen this one and I'm really looking forward to seeing George Sanders play this part. I know him best from, "The Picture of Dorian Gray." and, "All About Eve." In both he played extremely cynical men. It sounds like this part calls for something similar, but slightly more idealistic.

"What, me, an artist, cynical?"

Cynical, yes, but it's said he, "worships beauty," so that must be where Elena Verdago comes in.

I feel bad for nixing "The Razor's Edge" so I give you this. Gene Tierney has decided she wants Tyrone to propose and this is all she has to do.

There is a copy of THE MOON AND SIXPENCE (1942) on YouTube, but it has Spanish subtitles and the images seem rather "jerky" so I am not posting a link to it.
A better print without subtitles is on the Russian site

Thank you, as always, topbilled! I saw that jerky copy and was hoping you would find a better one.

I found two intros from Ben Mankiewicz to get us ready for tomorrow's screening.
Great finds, thank you. I'm surprised that it's the same text for both. Purely from anecdotal memory, I don't remember TCM doing this before. It seems they always write a new intro when they, well, intro a movie that they've "intro'd" before.

Yeah, that's interesting. At least he's not wearing the same clothes in both of them!

Yeah, that's interesting. At least he's not wearing the same clothes in both of them! Ha! Good one. What is really strange is how close together they were filmed - tan suit (Nov 2015) blue suit (Dec 2015). I guess he doesn't have your crack memory TB.
Also strange for me - it was apparently a low budget independent film but wiki has this entry:
Two versions were filmed. In one, Devi Wani, a Javanese actress, played Ata; in the other, Ms. Verdugo played her, to accommodate audiences for whom marriage between a Polynesian and an Englishman was considered unacceptable.
I am happy either way but filming it twice can't have been cheap. I am shocked I haven't seen it being chronically in love with being a great admirer of George Sanders. Hoping I can spot Devi Dja who is listed in the cast as Dancer / Technical Advisor.
If anyone is making fudge, please let me know.

Even before the film has started, I'm very disappointed for FadingFast -- I can't find a single photo of Charles Strickland (George Sanders) in a beret. How good of an artist could he possibly be?

The Continuing Adventures of Fawn and Me
Me: "Remember, we talked about make-believe versus real?"
Fawn: "Yes, but what does that have to do with my proposal of marriage to Norah from 'Of Human Bondage'?”
Me: "Well, umm, uh, you see Norah in 'Of Human Bondage' is a character in a story, not a real person - she's make-believe."
Fawn: "Yes, I have no trouble believing in her, that's why I want to propose, so that she won't be sad anymore."
Me: "Okay, we'll save the real-vs-make-believe lesson for a later time. As to the proposal...[Fawn says something]...what?"
Fawn: "I said, do you like my fur fluffed up this way? I want to look my best when I propose."
Me: "Sure, yes, you look very nice. But about the proposal."
Fawn: "I made reservations at a romantic French Bistro."
Me: "Oh, that's very nice. Wait, what am I saying?"
Fawn: "Do you like the ring?" [Fawn opens a ring box to reveal a lovely emerald cut diamond.]
Me: "Wow, that's very pretty."
Fawn: "I want her to like it; if she says yes, she'll be wearing it for the rest of her life."
Me: "Any woman would be proud...wait, you got me all confused."
Fawn: "I know it's a big step in my life. But don't worry, you are always welcome to visit Norah and me. Just call first, you know, you don't want to intrude."
Me: "Of course, I wouldn't think of...stop!"
Fawn: [Looking up with his big sincere eyes] "Did I forget something?"
Me: "How 'bout this, we watch today's movie, now, and talk about the proposal afterwards?”
Fawn: "Sure, I have a big question to ask you then as you know you're my best friend."
Me: "And you're mine."
Fawn: "I can't wait, would you be my best man?"
Me: [touched] "I'd be honored. I didn't think you would ask. Thank you buddy."
Fawn: "We'll work out the details after the movie."
Me: [long sigh] "Uh, yes, we'll have to do that."
