Fawn is really quite anxious about things. LOL He has moments of confidence followed by 'bouts of insecurity that he won't really admit to. So yes, he's a bundle of nerves.

Fawn: "I said, do you like my fur fluffed up this way? I want to look my best when I propose."
A little help from a ratt and/or fur backcombing no doubt.

Fawn: "I said, do you like my fur fluffed up this way? I want to look my best when I propose."
A little help from a ratt and/or fur backcombing no doubt. He's very particular about his fur and I have to say, he had it very nicely fluffed. He said he blew it dry against the nap, which is why it looked so thick.

Incidentally, one of Gaugin's sons threatened to sue the producers if they used any of his father's paintings in the film. This is not an 'authorized biography.' LOL

George Sanders appears rather clean shaven at the beginning of the story...
Sanders and Marshall previously costarred in FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT (1940) and they also both appeared in CAPTAIN BLACKJACK (1950).

So much truth vs. taking liberty to sift through here. A fact (if we can trust the wiki):
Initially working as a stockbroker, the financial crisis of 1882 significantly impacted Gaugin's brokerage career.

In real life, Gaugin left his wife and kids, because his wife was embarrassed that he wanted to paint instead of continue a more respectable line of work as a stockbroker. It was the wife who suggested he leave, to prevent the family from being gossiped about by the locals.

Desertion with no money! Pretty terrible. I wonder when child support and alimony first started to be required by law.

"I supported her for 17 years, why shouldn't she support herself for a change?"
Dialogue like this solidified Sanders' career playing cads.
