Beatrice "Binnie" Mary Hale-Monro (22 May 1899 – 10 January 1984) was an English actress, singer and dancer. She was one of the most successful musical theatre stars in London in the 1920s and 1930s, able to sing leading roles in operetta as well as musicals, and she was popular as a principal boy in pantomime. Her best-remembered roles were in the musicals No, No, Nanette (1925) and Mr. Cinders (1929), in which she sang "Spread a Little Happiness". In the 1930s she also pursued a film career and later had a radio show together with her brother Sonnie Hale. She continued to act and sing on stage through the 1950s. Lightnin' Slim (Otis Verries Hicks, March 13, 1913 – July 27, 1974) is a swamp blues pioneer and stalwart. He recorded for the Feature and Ace labels as well as for J.D. Miller at Excello Records for over a decade, took a break from the business, then came back to performing in the early 1970s. He was a major influence on the British blues boom in the 1960s. He often performed with his brother-in-law, Slim Harpo, and did the majority of his recording with harp man Lazy Lester.
The only chart hit of his career was "Rooster Blues."
Winter Time Blues is from the 1962-1965 Excello sessions.

Oh, good heavens, Happy Birthday, Lightnin' Hopkins! (March 15, 1912 – January 30, 1982) Always and forever in my playlist, my man. Who else could play bass, rhythm, lead, and percussion at the same time on one guitar?

For lovers of broomstick rides everywhere...
Sharon Tandy escaped anti-semitic hatred in her native South Africa by moving to Swinging London in the mid-60's. Her sound was so soulful that she took the name "Tandy", which meant 'Black' back home, as a badge of proud solidarity. Backed by the crack Mod band, the Fluer De Lys, she belted out soul strutters, epic ballads, and psychedelic monsters like "Hold On", "Daughter of the Sun", and "Gotta Get Enough Time". She even recorded four great songs in Memphis with the crucial Booker T & the MG's, a year before Dusty's great album. Though she never got enough acclaim for her work, an excellent retrospective CD called "You've Got To Believe...It's Sharon Tandy" brings it all together for the world to catch up.
I look into the mirror And it cracks from side to side When I go out The children run and hide
I roll my cigarettes' and drink red wine Out of a tin I lock the door so no one can get in
I'm a daughter of the sun I'm a sister of the moon I can jump upon my broomstick And be with you soon

SHARON TANDY -"DAUGHTER OF THE SUN" (1968) Thanks for that exhilarating broomstick ride, galacticgirrrl!! Wish her WikipediA discography yielded more info on Sharon Tandy's songs... Amen to that Dr No. And what of that fabulous women in music montage? So much work for me to do, so little time. If I could insert my favorite Baroness Von Sketch sketch here I would but I don't think it will work outside of Canada. Just in case it does....you know I personally love music nerds mansplaining their vinyl collections. (gulp) Hell time | Baroness von Sketch show

I see you haven't settled on a nickname for me yet, galacticgirrrl. Forgive the umbrage here, but I rather fancy the following fantasy... On a rejuvenation retreat to Jamaica, replete with snorkeling and a visit to Goldeneye, I find myself fending off a giant squid and trio of blind beggars: Upon my return to the States, I'm informed that Heather Reisman requests my presence in honor of my contribution to the Commonwealth.

Upon my return to the States, I'm informed that Heather Reisman requests my presence in honor of my contribution to the Commonwealth. Dammit. ROTFL. What a dismount! What style. What panache. Oh I have a nickname but I daren't utter it out loud because.... Apparently I must choose my next witticism carefully or it may be my last. (ps did we know Bessie Love was in a Bond film!? So much work to do)

Anyone who introduces someone to Sharon Tandy will likely be familiar with both here, one a response to your CATCH US IF YOU CAN post and the other to the Sharon Tandy/Les Fleur De Lys turn-on - thank you, galacticgirrrl: Well I may or may not own a several copies of Dateline Diamonds but it seems I should deny all knowledge of this film under oath - sheer sacrilege: "An uninspired attempt to capture two markets by combining sleuthing with pop music. Neither element is in any way distinguished, and the intervals for music merely slow down the detection"
I've never seen that PP item. Thank you for that and for the The Execution of Private Slovik. (And...The Victors (1963) which came up when I searched for a copy of the Sheen film) "Trumpeter Landfrey" One of the surviving trumpeters from The Charge of the Light Brigade of BalaklavaGuardian Angels - Pearls Before Swine The Balaklava album was dedicated to Private Edward Slovik, the only United States soldier executed for desertion during the Second World War. Producer Richard Alderson said: "I had made great progress in building up my studio on West 65th Street in NYC where Balaklava was recorded. I had added many microphones, outboard gear, and a very early Ampex 8 track 1” master recorder. We also had a collection of many exotic musical instruments and a great selection of sound effects available. This enabled a full studio production palette.... Balaklava was primarily an anti-war statement, and secondarily an aural essay on the history of sound and recording. Often these premises are conjoined.
