Oooh, I didn't know there was an earlier film! I'll definitely watch that. I've never seen a good copy, but even fuzzy, it's well worth seeing.

Oooh, I didn't know there was an earlier film! I'll definitely watch that. The original is a talkie from 1929. Marshall plays the lover at the beginning who gets killed. He has more screen time than the doomed lover does in this remake.
By 1940 he had been promoted to the husband role in the story.

"She's a plucky girl."
Davis is a lot of thing, but "plucky" isn't one of them.

I love all these white suits the men wear in this version.
Nobody ever talks about WB contract player James Stephenson who died a short time after making THE LETTER.
He received an Oscar nomination for playing the lawyer Howard Joyce.

Isn't Gale Sondergaard wonderful? A fabulous scene and she didn't need to speak a word.

That is an awesome Art Deco fan in Joyce's office.

Agreed, the colonial costuming, from pictures I've seen of real British colonial attire, is thoughtfully done.

Sen Yung is stealing this scene in the lawyer's office around the 29-minute mark.
Great actor who enjoyed a long career in films and on TV.

Everyone's been so kind to Mrs. Crosbie during her stay at the Hilton, I mean prison.

We saw him in one of our earlier selections...THE FLAME (1947) with John Carroll and Vera Ralston.

Davis' scenes with Stephenson are some of the best in the movies. He holds his own with her in every one.

Yes, Howard is not as gullible as the other men and calls her on her "inaccuracies."

One more comment on the wardrobe, the tailoring is incredible. It takes a extremely talented tailor to make clothes, like the men's suits, fit the way they do in this movie.
