I've never understood why Deborah Kerr failed to earn a competitive Oscar (she was nominated six times as Best Actress). Her work here and in HEAVEN KNOWS MR. ALLISON a year later is a masterclass in acting.

I agree, I saw "Heaven Knows..." recently and loved it. I was surprised how little it ever gets mentioned as it is a really, really good movie.

It doesn't make sense that this is all supposed to be a flashback, given the film's opening scenes...so how would Tom know all about the conversations Laura and Bill had in the privacy of their apartment. Tom would not have been privy to those talks, and this is all supposed to be from his point of view, and part of what influenced his bestselling book about his time with Laura.
I haven't seen or read the play but I would imagine there's no flashback structure in the stage version.

Just once I wish Minnelli would use some red and gray, instead of all this turquoise.
What is up with all this turquoise???

The other thing I don't get about the flashback construct is (spoiler alert if Andrea does't remember the end) how could Tom be going to homecoming when he was asked to leave the school after his junior year?

The kitchen scene, where she is talking about being attracted to people where nothing can come of it, makes her seem a bit predatory. As if she's starting to groom him for her own sexual purposes. But because this is 1956 Eisenhower America, we are supposed to root her on, since she can make him straight and help him overcome his gayness. LOL

Bill is written as too one-dimensional.

I'm having mixed feelings through this whole play. Today a 35 year-old female teacher with a high school senior boy would be arrested.
[Turquoise was the hot color in mid 1950's. My parents had a 30 foot living room with white sectional sofas, picture windows down the entire front, gigantic stone fireplace on the other side, and TUQUOISE carpet over the whole thing.]

Bill is written as too one-dimensional. I see him differently, as there are windows when he lets down his guard down. He strikes me as a man trying very hard to keep a front up that he doesn't fully believe in but he wants it to be.

Dad's so proud, "an amusing smoking car story." Until he learns his son was suicidal. Then he's out the door.

Until he learns his son was suicidal. Then he's out the door. He could not handle that. Is Tom's mother dead? I don't remember the plot addressing why it's just the father who visits him.
