When John Kerr needed a temporary break during the Broadway run, Anthony Perkins filled in.
And actually, I think Perkins (who was bisexual in real life) would have been interesting to watch in this. It only occurred to me when you asked me about the movie earlier in the week, but I think an intended irony of the movie is that most at the school assume J. Kerr is gay ("a sissy") and Erikson is a "man's man," but it's actually the other way around. I want to see if that theory holds up in this watching.

There's our song, I think that's the fifth movie we've watched featuring it. I know, it's amazing.

Probably if this was done today, the college kid would lose his virginity with Erickson's character...and the wife would be viperish and anguished-then-accepting. It would be more a mix of TEA AND SYMPATHY meets WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF.

Who would have thought there were unmanly ways to hit a tennis ball.

I don't find a lot of the dialogue to be realistic. I don't think college kids would really talk this way in some of these scenes. If they were making jokes about the other guy's masculinity, they'd be using slurs and the language would be harder.

Also, question, is this a college or prep school? I think prep school, but agree, it feels college like.

I'm not saying the dialogue had to use profanity, but there could have been harder language...and they could have done limp-wristed gestures or high pitched voices when talking about the sewing and costume for the play. It's a shortcoming of the film that it has the other guys being cruel without really having them be cruel in a realistic way.

The Dad is trying to find a way to reach his son, but he also can't see outside his "masculine" framework.
It's a sad scene in the locker room.

I find Edward Andrews' casting rather curious...I've never considered him a very masculine actor.
I would have picked someone like Walter Pidgeon for this role.

Not sure I get Vincente Minnelli's obsession with turquoise in the color design of the film.
What is this supposed to symbolize?

According to Wikipedia it's a prep school and he's 17. Deborah Kerr is 35 at the time although Wiki didn't say how old the character is.
I agree with you, Topbilled, some lines don't ring true to me. At times Tom sounds like Wally Cleaver.

I agree about Edward Andrews, too. I last watched him in "The Unguarded Moment," where he plays John Saxon's father, as a very prissy, woman hating man who we would all recognize today as an homophobic, repressed gay.

I would have picked someone like Walter Pidgeon for this role. Hadn't thought about this until your comment ⇧, but maybe that was intentional to have the dad not fit the mold so he tries overly hard to be "manly" to compensate. It could be why he's so upset his son isn't viewed as "masculine."

If this were made today, you'd have scenes of the other guys lifting weights. One of the more masculine boys would probably be using steroids to build up his muscles. There'd be talk about masturbation with some of them teasing Tom about what causes him to masturbate. The dialogue would be much more brutal.
