I remember loving this series when I was a kid. Never missed it. Only Leave It to Beaver beat it for the amount of love I felt.
The thing is - since its demise - I can't recall ever seeing it on the rerun/syndication circuit ever. It's actually been almost 60 years since the last time I saw this show.
Anyone else feel the same affection for this long-lost show?

It aired on Nick at Nite in the late 80s and 90s. That was the first time I was exposed to the show.

I always liked the way Dobie would talk to us about what was going on in his life while sitting beside the statue of the thinker. Also, there was this hilarious guy named Chatsworth Osborne Jr. who always cracked me up with his wimpy snobbery. Even though you saw it decades later than I, what'd you think of it?

I was a teenager and probably didn't analyze it too deeply. Honestly, I think the reason it caught my attention was that as a younger kid, I had watched all the Gilligan's Island episodes...so it was interesting to see Bob Denver in an earlier role. He was probably the main reason I watched. But I agree that Zelda was a fun character.

Tuesday Weld and Warren Beatty were both cast members the first season. Tuesday played Thalia Menninger, Dobie's high-maintenance big crush, and Warren was Milton Armitage, Dobie's main rival until Chatsworth Osborne Jr. came along. Both left after the first season. Tuesday had already done some movies, but the show really helped up her profile in the business. I'm old enough to remember its first run and it was one of my favorite shows.

I started watching old Dobie Gillis episodes on The Roku Channel while reading Dwayne Hickman's autobiography Forever Dobie: The Many Lives of Dwayne Hickman. In his book, Hickman goes into detail about what happened behind the scenes. Hickman had a crazy schedule, and during the second half of the third season, he was hospitalized with pneumonia and had to miss two weeks of work.
Hickman also talked about his co-stars. Hickman met Bob Denver in college, and the two remained friends after the series was cancelled. Frank Faylen, who played Dobie's father, was a grouch. Warren Beatty hated working on the show and Hickman didn't like him very much because he was self absorbed.
Back to the show. My favorite characters are Dobie and Zelda. I don't like Dobie's father because all he does is yell.

Did Hickman have anything to say about Sheila Kuehl, who played Zelda? I ask because she just retired as a Los Angeles City Council member and was involved in major political issues with the now defeated L.A. Sherrif, who had arrested her because she voted to pass a law that allowed the Council to fire the Sherrif (an elected position like the Council).

Also, what local (City) officials do or not do has little, to nothing, to do with the Federal Government. PS: I only made the comment about Sheila Kuehl, because it wasn't until the L.A. Times played up the conflict between the L.A. City Council and the Sherrif, that I learned she was a former actor who was featured on the Dobie Gillis show.

My point is that I don't wish to discuss politics within threads that are not in the 'misc' sub-forum where TB is allowing political threads. As you found out at SSO, most people are put-off, big time, by such political discussions especially in non-political topical threads. I would like to respect their wishes.

You're the one who brought up politics - talking about how a city council member was arrested by a sheriff for voting on a new law. Sounds pretty political to me. Oh, and by the way - I was careful to not talk about politics over there because it wasn't allowed. All the "complaints" were about other things - like quoting the lyrics of the polka song "She's Too Fat for Me" and saying what the statisticians claim about "cheating" men and women is bullshit. Tiki has no sense of humor about these things. And I'm pretty sure that if there actually were any, her little cabal of fems and simps were the so-called "complainants". It's all made up anyhow - I was never warned that anyone but Tiki was objecting to those things and never warned that I was in any danger of being banned. More intolerance is all it is. Welcome to Joe Biden's America.

Dwayne Hickman can be found in a few T.V. westerns made either right before or after Dobie Gillis. E.g., Wagon Train and Tales of Wells Fargo.
I find him to be a good actor in these shows handling dramatic roles well.
