My point is that I don't wish to discuss politics within threads that are not in the 'misc' sub-forum where TB is allowing political threads. As you found out at SSO, most people are put-off, big time, by such political discussions especially in non-political topical threads. I would like to respect their wishes Oh, and by the way - I was careful to not talk about politics over there because it wasn't allowed. All the "complaints" were about other things - like quoting the lyrics of the polka song "She's Too Fat for Me" and saying what the statisticians claim about "cheating" men and women is bullshit. Tiki has no sense of humor about these things.. And I'm pretty sure that if there actually were any, her little cabal of fems and simps were the so-called "complainants". It's all made up anyhow - I was never warned that anyone but Tiki was objecting to those things and never warned that I was in any danger of being banned. Wait... what?!? Tiki not having a sense of humor?!? I'm shocked, shocked!! Making Tiki a moderator is like giving Barney Fife a gun. Someone with a little bit of power who will take it way to seriously.

I'm very much in agreement with your appraisal - but why are you using a "guest" designation rather than registering? It's very frustrating not knowing your board identity and whether or not you are a repeating contributor to our community.

I've been told this is a fair site. Administration doesn't bully here. Of course, if that's true - it's one of the most rare and precious sites on the net. Nevertheless, there's no way I can really respect any poster that hides behind a "guest" designation. There's no way of knowing if I'm communicating with the same person from one day to another.

I was agreeing with you but you 're fixated on whether I'm logged in or not. Odd. You sound like the person who deleted his/her account in the beginning of the year after stamping his foot about guest user s and then complained about it to the other site.

I assumed you were concerned about the one mod at SSO finding out about what you said here and then retaliating at the SSO site (since I also assumed you log on to SSO with an actual username). I admit I'm curious about your former TCM username and SSO one if you do use that site, but you have your reasons, and I can respect that. As for 'the person': that was some guy with a username of jimmy. He still insists TB banned him from this site, which I still do not believe. (TB told me it was all just a misunderstanding).

Thanks, james. I just wanted to agree anonymously with intrepid about Tiki not being my first choice as a moderator. Somehow it got weird. Jimmy! That's right. Good ol' jimmy. He and intrepid had similar beefs about "guests" posting. Well, that's it for me. I'll log in next time I post here, there and eveywhere.

No, it didn't.
Your being afraid to post under a recognizable moniker is what's "weird" - but that's a completely different topic from any opinions about Tiki's lack of humor or misuse of power.
You say you're gonna log in from now on, though? That's fabulous. This forum deserves more attention, and courageous freedom of speech serves that.

Uh, the former L.A. Sherrif was a MAGA guy. Also, what local (City) officials do or not do has little, to nothing, to do with the Federal Government. PS: I only made the comment about Sheila Kuehl, because it wasn't until the L.A. Times played up the conflict between the L.A. City Council and the Sherrif, that I learned she was a former actor who was featured on the Dobie Gillis show. Point is - it's a lawless country now. What a lame comment.

Hey all, I thought this was a discussion about Dobie Gillis...
Speaking of Dobie, I checked to see if all the seasons are available on DVD, and I see that a complete series set is selling for $56 on Amazon. Seems a bit steep.

It's good to know it's still available, and probably in a pretty good copy. I wouldn't be surprised if someone sneaks it onto YouTube at sone point. Maynard G. Krebbs was a totally unique character in series television at that time. After Dobie's first season 77 Sunset Strip offered a cleaned-up "hipster" type (Edd "Kookie" Byrnes), but he always seemed really fake compared to what Bob Denver did with his character. As well as going into politics, as mentioned before (the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the California State Assembly), Sheila James (Zelda Gilroy) also consistently worked for LGBT causes in both her personal and political capacities.

I had read all three Dobie Gillis books before watching the show so it was fun to see how it was cast and played. Maynard G. Krebs was always my favorite, I think he was probably one of TV's first examples of a "beatnik." I think Bob Denver's interpretation of that character was copied in a lot of movies during the sixties.
Max Shulman wrote the books and some of the scripts for the show as well as, "Rally Round the Flag Boys," which was made into a Paul Newman movie. I might not agree with myself today but at the time I thought his writing was hilarious, lots of his written scenes were a little too R-rated to make it to the screen, but very funny.

I was a big fan of The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. Has anyone seen the bizarre 1988 TV movie Bring Me the Head of Dobie Gillis? It's set 25 years after the series and is based (!) on Friedrich Durrenmatt's 1956 play The Visit. The English-language premiere of the play was directed by Peter Brook and featured the Lunts, so this work has some serious provenance. A 1964 film (which changed the ending) featured Ingrid Bergman and Anthony Quinn. There was even a Kander/Ebb musical adaptation, starring Chita Rivera. There have been countless other adaptions, in Senegal, Iran, and elsewhere; and an opera. In the Dobie Gillis film, Dobie is married to Zelda. Suddenly, Maynard G. Krebs appears with a message from an old acquaintance: Thalia Menninger, played by Connie Stevens. Thalia has become super rich and has bought up most of the businesses and properties in town. She wants Dobie and, when he rejects her, she will only save the town if the people kill Dobie Gillis. I find it totally surreal that an enjoyable and innocuous classic sitcom should be turned into a movie based on a play by a Swiss avant-garde dramatist which is basically an indictment of capitalism. It's fun to watch, and very odd, and features many actors from the sitcom: Hickman, Denver, Steve Franken, and others.

I haven't seen the TV movie and I had no idea about the connection to The Visit. Tuesday Weld was still active at the time so I wonder if she was approached, though I guess she was kind of known for turning down projects which didn't interest her. She'd already gone to the dark side in Pretty Poison (1968), in which she played a killer cheerleader opposite Anthony Perkins, so it wouldn't have been too much of a stretch to do a psycho Thalia. As well as being an indictment of capitalism, it could also have been a sly comment on the Boomer generation, many of whom went from Dobie-era squares to late-60's "flower children", to corporate clones by the late 1980's. It's my generation, so I can say it.
