"Captains Courageous," 1937, staring Spencer Tracy and Freddie Bartholomew. Based on the novel by Rudyard Kipling, this is the story of a 15 year-old boy who has been spoiled by his wealthy father, but learns valuable lessons from other older men on his adventures.

His father (played by Melvyn Douglas) also learns some valuable lessons. Freddie was one fine child actor.

Good choice Andrea. I'm really looking forward to this one later today. I haven't seen it in decades.

I'm looking forward to it, too I've never seen it myself, but picked it based on all the rave reviews I read on Rotten Tomatoes. Plus I know I like Kipling.

It's a good role for Spencer Tracy who earned back-to-back Oscars for this film and BOYS TOWN.

To get ready for today's screening, I had to dig through my DVD collection...because I knew I had bought CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS. Years ago. And sure enough, there it was...I had never opened it. I believe I bought this when the DVD first came out in 2006.
Anyway, the disc has a few extras on it...There is a strange short film called THE LITTLE MAESTRO with an entertainer nobody today has heard of...Jerry Bergen. It runs 11 minutes. Read the reviews on the IMDb and you will get a sense how bizarre the thing is!
And the disc also has an animated cartoon called LITTLE BUCK CHEESER about a mouse that wants to go to the moon. It's cute.
I wonder if these two shorts, both made by MGM and released in 1937, were originally shown in theaters right before CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS. There has to be a reason these seemingly random titles were included as extras.
The theatrical trailers are also included. And there is even a radio promo for the film.

I want to see the cartoon about the mouse who wants to go to the moon.
Edit Add: I just found it on the Internet Archive site and have enough time to watch it now. Back shortly.

I just watched him, too. Loved the ending "I promise to always do, just what Mama tells me, too!" LOL

Glad you had a chance to watch the mouse cartoon. LOL
Just pressed play...
The second trailer on this disc indicates the film was re-released by MGM in 1946. So it was popular with audiences for many years. Still is!
