All these great character actors...
Lionel Barrymore, Charley Grapewin, John Carradine No kidding. Sam McDaniel is fantastic too. Unfortunately, he had to play traditional "black" roles, but still, you can tell he's talented as he becomes his character.

This boat is awfully clean. MGM's glossy production values at the expense of realism. LOL

A few days ago I watched RINGS ON HER FINGERS (1942) a romcom from 20th Century Fox, where John Carradine was on contract.
Some scenes were filmed on a boat along the coast of Catalina Island. And apparently, the boat was owned by John Carradine.

Bartholomew is absolutely amazing. He's all of 13 here, probably 12 when they were making the movie.

Bartholomew is absolutely amazing. He's all of 13 here, probably 12 when they were making the movie. Yes, one of the best child actors of his generation.
Later he became a director and producer of daytime soap operas for Procter & Gamble in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.
There are episodes of Search for Tomorrow on YouTube which have his name in the closing credits as "Executive Producer Fred Bartholomew."
He spent the final years of his life in Florida.

Because of the 1970s, it's hard to hear "Captain Disko" and not think about that cheesy music.

Because of the 1970s, it's hard to hear "Captain Disko" and not think about that cheesy music. That's funny. Are you saying if MGM had remade the story in the late 70s it would have had the Bee Gees on the soundtrack...? LOL

I would have liked to have seen a few scenes with the father back on the other ship, learning his son had gone overboard...conducting some sort of search.
Melvyn Douglas just sort of disappears from the middle of this story. Also, I think Freddie's character would've been missing his father a little more. Harvey gets so chummy with Manuel, it's like he has forgotten all about his real dad.

Bartholomew is absolutely amazing. He's all of 13 here, probably 12 when they were making the movie. I'm simply in awe of him. I'm appreciating all the other actors that I'm more familiar with, too. This deserves all the awards.

The halibut scene is great.
Now Harvey will stop cheating.
