I read that Charlie Tabash has been let go as well. Awful news. Charlie is one of the nicest guys ever!

I'm still not convinced that the "stunning rebrand situating this classic network in the contemporary world" has moved TCM in the right direction. Somehow I get the impression that TCM is on an equal footing with the Cartoon Network, etc. and that makes me very nervous. Let's hope all the happy talk isn't just a lot of corporate spin. It's one thing to list past achievements and another to keep making them.

I am not saying this to be glib...but some of this reminds me of something I once experienced.
I was "let go" by a boss I didn't really get along with...we had completely different views of what our organization's mission was (supposed to be). She decided not to renew my contract. I remember I went to her boss, not necessarily to complain, or to get my job back, but to make sense of it, because this was the first time I grasped that some jobs, good jobs, are lost due to political reasons.
Her boss liked me and had actually tried to get my contract renewed behind the scenes. But the decision had been made and my replacement was already hired. So there was nothing he could do. I remember he said to me, and this is something that always stayed with me: 'You had a good run.'
It felt as if he was my coach, and I had just crossed a finish line at the end of a marathon. I realized he was probably right...I had achieved a lot of good things there, I did have a good run so to speak, and now it was time to go in a different direction.
Looking back at it now, I am glad that job ended, because my next job was five times better. I relocated from California to Arizona, met a lot of people in Arizona that impacted the rest of my life...and if I had stayed in that old job and continued to deal with the politics of that old job, I never would have grown. So I am grateful for that firing.

I'm being petty here. The powers that be at WBD assure that TCM will continue airing "culture defining movies" That word culture doesn't mean anything in this context-whose culture? WBD should clarify what movies, what did those films do to define culture? Culture is similar to how the word freedom gets used. We all want freedom-but to what? Drive on any side of the road? rip out the neighbor's flowers I don't like. WBD used the word culture to sound noble while saying nothing at all.

The whole world of TV is going through major changes. Cable/Direct/Dish is sinking faster than projected. Most channels on those services are just filler. And now the bottom is falling out. Look at how many on boards like this don't even have TCM anymore (including me). That business model is obsolete. And they haven't figured out how to monetize it to their satisfaction.
Meanwhile, free streaming channels and OTA channels are going strong. Maybe its time to stop being so greedy

Wow, I highly recommend reading this twitter thread. The author of the Entertainment Weekly article from January that included the TCM hosts indicating that "all is well," for the future of TCM, really crucifies the WB CEO. But that isn't what stood out to me. If you scroll to the end of her comments, the Czar of Noir, TCM employee, Eddie Muller actually co-signs onto the criticism of WB's decisions that the author just published for the world to see. That is damning when you have a TCM host openly agreeing. Maureen Lee Lenker on Twitter

This article at Variety has been updated with a positive statement from directors Spielberg, Scorsese and Anderson after they met with CEO Zaslav about the future of TCM:
I personally would have a hard time believing anything after what has happened this week, but time will tell.

Now maybe you understand why I never minded when they began to sell wine and boxsets. If that's what will keep it afloat then so be it.
