In Stamboul Quest (1934), Myrna Loy, as a German spy, wore several gowns that were sure to attract her targets. Here are two views of one of them. It seems that Myrna is following in Jean Harlow’s footsteps with this backless number, and it’s not hard to see why George Brent is smitten.

Thing is, with Myrna, it's easy to be smitten regardless how she's dressed. And at any age. Sepiatone

Bunnywhit, I'm sorry, but even split up, I don't see the images. It's hard to understand why, if you can see them, we can't. Thank you once again, FadingFast!
I see some of the pics I posted throughout this site (who knows....perhaps all of them?) have disappeared. I've had problems with my photo storage in the past, and I guess I am having problems again. But it doesn't make sense to me that I can see the pics in this particular thread but no one else can. An expert at this I am not. I'll try to figure out what's going on. The last time I had this problem, I worked and worked at it, then everything seemingly just miraculously reappeared after a couple weeks. Grrrrr...!

If Kay Francis wanted to upstage her co-stars in The Feminine Touch (1941), she certainly succeeded when she wore this hat. I mean, honestly, can you look at anything else in this scene?

Well, NoShear. If I had to sum up in a word what I think of Katy Perry's coronation suit, that word would be: YIKES!
I'll begin by saying that my opinion is only my opinion, and I have no mean-spirited intentions.
On the plus side, I can say that it is appropriate and lovely that Perry is wearing a design from Vivienne Westwood, the British fashion designer who died unexpectedly late last year. The suit is also a pretty shade of lavender that befits the occasion and looks well with Perry's skin and hair tones.
But the suit is so poorly tailored and ill-fitting that it looks cheap, sloppy, and uncomfortable.
The Jacket: The sleeves are slightly too short, and the raised back shawl collar coupled with the oddly set sleeves make Perry's shoulders look very sloped and drag down her silhouette. The neckline is far too low, and the lower portion of the shawl collar gapes instead of resting attractively against her chest. The buttonholes are strained, so too are the snaps between the buttons, and the center front of the jacket is puckered. I couldn't get a good look at the back of the jacket, but I can only assume that it is puckered as well. The pocket flaps gape. The lower hem of the jacket looks strange to me. It is very puffy, almost as if the curve was not clipped before turning and/or the lower edge was not understitched, both techniques that help curves to lie flat and neat. All of these issues say one thing to me -- the jacket is too small for her.
The Skirt: Is this garment not lined? The way the skirt puckers and clings is unsightly, and the line of the hem is very pronounced. Horizontal puckers across the front of the skirt and puckers that angle from her hips to center front thighs indicate once again that the garment simply is too small. And this skirt has a bum ruffle? Even if the skirt was well tailored, I don't think the ruffle would be an attractive element. She obviously did not ask the one question women supposedly always ask: "Does this make my butt look big?"
The Accessories: The gloves are too slouchy, an indicator that they were simply a bit too big for her. I do not think the silk flower on the lapel is an attractive or necessary addition to an already busy outfit. I think the style of the fascinator is fine, but of course its enormity is ridiculous. Not only does it detract from her visually, but the very fact that she had difficulty seeing made her movements awkward and unattractive. Her shoes and bag are nice, but I would rather see them in ivory instead of white because she is wearing pearls.
If Perry's suit had been properly fitted (and minus the bum ruffle), I think it would have been quite becoming. And I find it unfortunate that she wore that fascinator. In nearly all the photos I've seen, she is either straining to see or her face is obscured. Had I been invited to an important historical event, I would want to be sure I could take it all in, and I would want my face to be shining and smiling in photos for all to see.
I'm going to have to call foul on the design house for this one. They should be ashamed to have their name on such an ill-fitting garment. Because of the volume of garments Perry wears, it actually might be difficult for her to know what does and does not fit properly. I think she was a victim here.

Thank you for your in-depth writeup, BunnyWhit... I always seem to be WOWed by Katy Perry's style - in part to her coloring in relation to her complimentary choices of color you touched on, but otherwise your eye for detail leaves me far down the red carpet.

But crazy hats are a MUST for stuffy old English rituals.

Maybe Perry should have practiced with the fascinator. Unfortunately, she might not have had enough time with the outfit to do so; there's no telling when she received it. But I noticed in photos that other women who chose large headwear for the event seemed to perch them in less obstructive positions. It seems dangerous to have vision obstructed as she did. Is that why she stumbled? I have only seen the photos, not video, so I don't know if she stepped on a pebble, or couldn't see for the fascinator, or what. A fall would have been awful.

I wish I could find a better, fuller picture of this costume Grace Kelly wore in The Swan (1956). It's a simple around-the-palace look she wore to visit the tutor (Louis Jourdan) of her younger brothers but I think it's more elegant than some of the fancier things she wore.

I, too, usually find her not-fancy outfits to be my favorites, like this beautiful all-pink one she wore in "High Society," with the insanely cute cardigan with a butterfly on it.

While we're on the subject of Grace Kelly, her red dress in Dial M for Murder. I love how vibrant it is, and she wears it wonderfully. Here it is full length

Have you ever had a dream that was so vivid it seemed real? I've been googling to see if the outfit Loretta Young wore when she popped over the other day was perhaps real....it was so adorable: a cute casual pink romper/short overall with a white blouse. Apparently I needed help returning a rental van to the mall and she was just so lovely and nice to volunteer. Even when I made us pop back inside to see exactly where the car depot was she didn't skip a beat. She was even polite enough to grab my house keys out of door lock for me. I didn't find the vision in pink but this one is gorgeous.
