Let's talk about this gorgeous thing, shall we? (The beaded bolero, not Madeleine Lebeau.....though she is gorgeous.)
I distinctly remember being struck by this midriff-baring beaded bolero the first time I saw Casablanca (1942), and I continue to be struck by it every time I see the film. Later I learned that Marked Woman (1937) is where the garment got its start.
Orry-Kelly designed the dress and matching bolero jacket for Bette Davis' Mary Dwight. Both the floor length gown with matching jacket are made of silk and fully embroidered with all-over fringe of white Austrian lead crystal straw beads. Davis wears the dress in the film, but I honestly don't remember her in the bolero aside from stills. That's good in my opinion because it's a lot. Too much. I feel the gown and jacket fight each other for dominance, and the result is an ensemble that wears Bette rather than the other way around.
But Bette in the dress alone is grand.
At some point, the gown was converted to a high-low hem, which I find to be less attractive than the full-length gown. I don't know that I've ever seen this altered version in a film, but I'm always on the lookout for it.

I've enjoyed your descriptions, but I don't see any pictures, which it seems you posted. I am see all the other pictures in this thread, though. Are others seeing pictures with Bunny's post?

Thanks for the heads-up, FadingFast! All of the pics had fallen out of the post. I put them back in, and hopefully they'll stay.

Sorry everyone. That's so disappointing. I can see the images on my end again, but that certainly doesn't do anyone else any good. Perhaps my post was too image heavy, so I'll try splitting it up. Please let me know if these don't work; perhaps there is a problem at my pic storage.

Bunnywhit, I'm sorry, but even split up, I don't see the images. It's hard to understand why, if you can see them, we can't.

Fred Astaire had two things that made him look so well dressed all the time: an incredible sense of personal style and an enviable comfort wearing clothes.

Oh I love those pictures of Fred Astaire, particularly the striped suit -- he doesn't have to move to be graceful!

I think Audrey Hepburn looked the best she ever did on film (and that's saying something) in William Wyler's How to Steal a Million (1966). I've tried to find a good picture of this particular outfit but most of the screen shots from the movie are either cropped short or her arms are folded in front of her. It's so simple and therefore so Audrey. To really appreciate it you need to see it in motion because the broad pleated panels in front and back move beautifully. Givenchy, of course.
