The "Top 4" seeds all remain (Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Wizard of Oz, Singin' in the Rain). The #5 seed, Vertigo was upset in the first round by Top Hat. Will post the final 2 matchups of the 2nd round shortly.

I'm surprised CITIZEN KANE was eliminated. Sometimes people get fatigued when something is highly rated for such a long time. They want something new. I suppose that's part of it. However, I do find that CITIZEN KANE retains its value. I've probably seen this film about fifty times, no exaggerating, and even when it's been awhile since I've seen it, I still think about it.

Part of it for me is that while I don't "enjoy" "Kane" the way I do "Casablanca," it is still powerful and impressive. I can simply watch "Casablanca" at any time and come in on any scene, and I'm enjoyably engaged. Whereas, with "Kane." it's more of an appreciation of what it accomplished, but sometimes, I'm just not up for watching it.

Probably the reason I think of KANE so much is because it has influenced so many films that have come after it. Sometimes if I am watching something by Oliver Stone, I will see a certain camera angle or gimmick, and I will think, he took that from KANE.
Since film schools across the country spend so much time on KANE, it is not surprising that 'newer auteurs' attempt to emulate Welles' achievements with this film in order to make their own similar mark on the industry.

Two months later, the inaugural Classic Cinema Bracket Challenge is complete. The Championship match was a three-way battle between Casablanca/Sunset Boulevard/The Wizard of Oz. You chose Michael Curtiz' 1942 Best Picture Winner, "Casablanca" as the champion! Much thanks to everyone who participated and I hope you all found this enjoyable. I am open to another bracket of some sort in the near future if there is any interest. Just throw out some ideas and we can go from there.

Cineclassics, thank you so much for running this challenge. It's been a ton of fun and I know a ton of work went into it.
A few ideas that I believe were tossed around earlier on for other challenges were "favorite Golden Era star" and "favorite classic film noir," both could be fun ones if you're up to running another challenge.

Yes, I concur with Fading Fast...well done. Also, it would be good to do one on stars.
However, since I am an advocate for neglected films and B films, I felt that this challenge lacked a bit of suspense because we all knew the most famous titles were going to end up in the final round.
Even if we knew a B film wouldn't advance too high, it would still have been nice to include a few lesser known titles to stimulate discussion and discovery of those films that maybe haven't been on everyone's radar.
So if you do another challenge focusing on stars, I hope it is not just the Bette Davises and Cary Grants, or TCM's most played stars, but a more substantial cross section of talent from the golden era. That way if Rick I mean Humphrey Bogart still emerges as the winner, we have had conversations along the way about the Jimmy Durantes and Richard Baseharts, too.
But yes, thank you for doing this...we know you put a lot of effort and organizing into it!

But yes, thank you for doing this...we know you put a lot of effort and organizing into it! I like this ⇧ idea a lot, but is there a way to run a "B challenge?" Sort of like picking a JV team or something. So maybe take out/disqualify the 25-50 most-popular movie and, for the star challenge, the 25-50 most-popular stars (and I understand how arbitrary that decision will be) and then run a challenge. Just a thought as, otherwise, as Topbilled notes, we are still probably going to end up with the same "big" movies/stars in the last few brackets.

AFI has lists of most popular films, actors and actresses. Could call those lists the A-list and chose people and films not on the lists for the JV team.
