During the annual New Years Eve Sy-Fy channel Twilight Zone marathon, they aired some on the Jordan Peele reboot from 2019. We tried a few but they weren't very good. Seems like it you take on a beloved, iconic tv show like TZ you are setting yourself up for failure. At from whatbI.saw, he wasn't redoing the old episodes, he was coming up.with his own stories. They just weren't great.

There's been a couple or so TZ reboots that also fell short. Forest Whitaker hosted and narrated one of them.

Not a classic sitcom but...
Mythbusters ran for 14 seasons. This is the 20th anniversary of its premiere. Discovery downsized the last season of the show, getting rid of Grant, Tory, and Kari and made fewer episodes.
The following year, Discovery re-booted Mythbusters with two new younger, hipster hosts. Terrible. Discovery underestimated the chemistry between Adam & Jamie and the years of experience they each had before the show. The reboot was not well received by fans and didn't last long.

Interesting. That might work.

Interesting. That might work. I can see Kathy Bates pulling it off but why call it Matlock? She could just use the template of the show and call it something else. Isn't Matlock sort of shorthand now for old people shows? I wonder if that will help or hurt the series. Listening to an interview with Natasha Lyonne about her new show, Poker Face, the interviewer compared it to Columbo. Sounds like they update the old forumla. From imdb: "Charlie has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying. She hits the road with her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can't help but investigate and solve."

But Columbo didn't "hit the road". He was a detective for the Los Angeles police department. No comparison whatsoever.

I haven't seen the show but I suppose the reporter meant the general formula of solving crime and getting new guest stars every episode. The reporter probably has never even seen an episode of Columbo.

Sure. Columbo did concentrate on attracting well known "stars" and celebrities as guests on the show. One local TV critic once wrote that while he did enjoy the show as it was very well written and Falk created one of the most unique characters on TV, he also quipped that it could have later been considered "The land lubber's Love Boat." Which as you know, also featured a lot of "star" and celebrity guest appearances. Sepiatone

Sepiatone The only comparison wasn't just "hit the road"; E.g. there was this "Charlie has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying". Anyhow as to why they would title the show Matlock: Network TV. is mostly for us "old folks", so why not leverage a show's title and character (as an offspring of the original character) for marketing purposes even if the new show has little to do with the old show.

I think I figured out the connection for the reporter's comment about Poker Face and Columbo. The star, Marsha Lyonne, sounds like a female Peter Falk.

You probably are right. I'm expecting a reboot of Murder She Wrote next.

I refuse to believe network television is only for us "old folks". As to why the use of the Matlock name.... Probably recognition. The reboot's character is named Madeline which leaves out a continuance of the Matlock legacy carried out by an offspring as Ben Matlock's daughter( who was his assistant on the show) was named Charlene.

The original TZ had the Space Race, Civil Rights, Presidential Assassination, Cold War, Technological advancement with computers, the so called 50's Suburban Life, etc... and so many themes all happening at the same time. And they were so controversial, Rod Serling had to disguise them with aliens and robots.
All the reboots went after the scary movie themes. And they get old very fast on TV. None have the guts to go after real controversial issue of the day.
