This Sunday, January 15th at 3pm ET / 1pm MT, we will be watching and chatting about the 1935 movie "Dangerous," starring Bette Davis, Franchot Tone, Alison Skipworth and Margaret Lindsay
In this short film (79 minutes), Bette Davis plays a Broadway star who is all but washed up due to alcoholism. Franchot Tone plays a fan of hers who tries to help Davis, against her wishes, revive her career. However, since Tone is engaged, as his involvement with Davis increases and takes on romantic overtones, complications ensue.
I found a good copy of the movie here: Link to "Dangerous"
I hope you will join us - right here in this thread - for this fun melodrama on Sunday.
We are a nice group who welcomes newcomers.

Dangerous is a good movies but falls in the middle-of-the-pack as it relates to Bette Davis films. This is the type of plot that would have been better done during the pre-code era. Of course it all relates to the type of ending someone is looking for. This film lands somewhere in the middle and I find that to be my least favorite of the 3 options. I would have rather seen Davis go-down hard for her actions, or, for a fully happy ending of her being with a man she really loves, despite being married to a man she doesn't.

It definitely would have been better as a pre-code, then we wouldn't have gotten all the silliness about separate bedrooms, etc. and it could have taken a harder and more-realistic look at her addiction and her and Tone's affair.
But I still like this one for its willingness to take on the subject of alcoholism with some confidence and, heck, there are very few Davis films from this era that aren't worth a watch.
I think for a 1930s movie that's not a pre-code, it will be a fun short one to do for a Sunday Live, especially since, so far, we haven't done a 1930s movie. Next week, we go full-on pre-code with 1932's "The Rich are Always with Us," which has Ms. Davis in a much-smaller supporting role as the wonderfully named "Malbro."

It's been a few years since I've seen DANGEROUS, and to be honest, I think last time I caught it halfway through, so this will be a good chance for me to watch the whole thing uninterrupted.
I haven't seen THE RICH ARE ALWAYS WITH US.
Yesterday I watched EX-LADY which features Miss Davis with Gene Raymond, and I really enjoyed that film!

"Ex-Lady" is a good one in the mix-and-match "I love you but do or don't want to marry you who does or doesn't want to marry me, etc., etc.," vogue in movies at that time. "Illicit" was Barbara Stanwyck's 1932 very good take on similar material. God bless the pre-codes.

You do realize TCM is playing this film in 2 weeks, on the 29th? Is there a rush to stream this for some reason, ahead of that showing?

You do realize TCM is playing this film in 2 weeks, on the 29th? Is there a rush to stream this for some reason, ahead of that showing? Thank you for the heads up. My take, and I'll gladly defer to Topbilled, is that, when scheduling 52 movies a years, situations like this come up often - it happened recently with "My Reputation -" but it is too hard to alter the schedule every time it does. So, as long as we have a good copy to stream, I think we stay with the schedule, but again, this is Topbilled's show, so I'll defer to him. Regardless, thank you for pointing this out.

I am glad Fading Fast chose this film. I think that if we discuss it on the 15th on this forum, it won't prevent people from watching it again on TCM if they choose to do so.
As Fading Fast mentioned, if we end up looking at 52 different melodramas during the course of the year, it is inevitable that some of them will air on TCM around the same time period.

In addition to stars Bette Davis and Franchot Tone, our movie for Sunday Live tomorrow, "Dangerous," has the incredibly talented and personable Alison Skipworth playing the housekeeper with more sense than either Tone, her employer, or Davis, Tone's houseguest, whom she is setting straight right here:
It also has the pretty, talented and somewhat-forgotten-today star Margaret Lindsay below wondering if she's losing fiancé Tone to an alcoholic theater hasbeen:
Please join us right here in this thread tomorrow (1/15) at 3pm ET / 1pm MT for a fun viewing and chat about the movie. You can find a link to a good copy of the movie here: "Dangerous"

Margaret Lindsey evened the score a few years later in Jezebel. (and yea, Lindsey is another one of those secondary leading actress, like Hussey and Fitzgerald that always add something to a film even if there role is secondary).

Hi all, Topbilled reached out to me via email earlier today to let me know that if the board didn't come up in time to do this week's edition of "Sunday Live," we'd move "Dangerous" to next Sunday.
Since the board, unfortunately, wasn't up in time today, we'll meet at 3pm ET / 1pm MT next week (1/22) to view and chat about "Dangerous."
Have a great week in the meantime and see you all next Sunday.

Just a reminder, since the Forum was down this past Sunday and we couldn't watch 1935's "Dangerous" as planed, we will be watching it this Sunday, 1/22, at 3pm ET / 1pm MT, right here, in this thread.

Oh good, I just happened to see this. I thought I had missed out and I still wouldn't have seen this because I was looking in the wrong thread. I'm looking forward to to the Margaret Lindsey part.
