Ah! Is there much difference from motor bikin' to motor scootin'? There is - in my headphones. Scootin' is making me dizzy, in a good way. Ooooh my. Matthew Sweet always knows how to get his hands on great guitarists like Bob Quine and Richard Lloyd. Guitars, motorcycle, Challenger and a couple of cinematic nods...what could be better?

Well I heard and saw guitars, motorcycles and bonus points for a movie reference. And you know I am all in for an all girl band. Somehow even a link to Paul Westerberg. Bravo. Well played.

Y'know, I've mentioned in other music forums that I was once in a band with another guitarist who was classically trained. And in the late '60's focused his energy and skill towards jazz. While studying music in Wayne State University he took part in a small jazz-centric "recital" at a music conservatory on Kirby St. behind the DIA. in '73. He did a duet with a young black Wayne State student named Earl Klugh. Klugh blew. Me. Away. I had the pleasure of being introduced to him by my friend, and I'm sure if I confronted him today he'd have no idea who the Hell I am. And now, a couple more Detroit guitarist.... ROBERT WHITE(of Motown's Funk Brothers) HARVEY MANDEL( once with Canned Heat for about a year..'69-'70. Sepiatone

HARVEY MANDEL( once with Canned Heat for about a year..'69-'70. Or worse, he WOULD remember you!?? Like the time I had the pleasure of meeting Grace Slick. I think I said something really idiotic. I am lucky she didn't have her gun with her. <WINKY FACE/EYE ROLL> No footage for Mandel I guess? Anything I want I can't find.... Genre, Husbands & Wives...

The only footage of Mandel I could find was of him years after his active career was over and didn't display any of the music he did solo(and younger). Other than that there was footage of Canned Heat at Woodstock that would only offer split second glimpses.
Another Detroit(or Michigan) guitarist, known largely around here from his time with FROST and more widely from his tenure with ALICE COOPER is....
DICK WAGNER; (With Alice Cooper)

There must be something in the water in Detroit. Maybe it has to do with the really strange colour of the St. Clair River!? Seems to work in everyone's favour musically speaking. I guess the chemicals help with finger action on the guitar. As I channel surfed around the dial recently a young Canadian couple in a pairs competition was skating to a song that sounded so familiar. Since rock'n'roll is MIA on most airwaves today and I haven't heard it in a while it took me a minute to place it. I like to think I'm not a Styx fan but I know I am. You mean figure skaters were skating to REO Styxwagon? (how I refer to both Styx and REO Speedwagon since I never heard(or saw) that much difference between them. And Detroit is bordered on the Canadian side by the DETROIT river, not the St.Clair. And which probably looks worse that the St. Clair river ever could. Sepiatone

Ha! REO Styxwagon. Good one. I'm starting to really appreciate all the middle of the road stuff of yesteryear I never had much time for when it came out.
And now for something completely different... Kind of surprised Mae didn't play guitar. I think she did play piano!? Her Rock'n'Roll album is fabulous.

Well, she wasn't really playing guitar in that clip. Look close and you'll notice she's holding a TENOR guitar, which only has four strings. And it clearly sounds like a six string. But she was good at making it LOOK like she was actually playing, which most non players never bothered with much in movies.
But this guy is clearly actually playing.....

Ouch. Scorching. I get carpal tunnel syndrome just listening to that one.
Slight segue into the land of heat...
It was interesting to see The Red Hot Chili Peppers on 60 Minutes tonight. John Frusciante plays perpetually and prefers to warm up for four hours the day of concerts. More carpal tunnel. Chad Smith joked that the band used to have groupies; now they have tech support and physical trainers. Too right.
Well no big leads in this one. I just need to hear some guitar rock. Uriah Heep - Lady in Black
