Another moment I forgot: Mickey Rooney pretending to be a girl in HUCKLEBERRY FINN. A good portrayal that wasn't played with a hint of humiliating gays. Good one, and you're right that it was played as just another one of Huck's many tricks up his sleeve and it certainly helped that Rooney had such an expressive face. I couldn't find a full-body shot but I'm curious about what Huck would have done for shoes. He was mostly barefoot himself, so he probably could get away with that under that long skirt. Thanks, kim; it was fun being reminded of this one. He (she) comes in at about 1:40 in the preview but I still can't see the feet. We can hear how the voice helped sell the illusion, though it was a close call. It's not something anyone would have been expecting, so Huck was able to get away with it even though he didn't have much to work with other than his ability to improvise.

Liev Schreiber played a veteran who turned to security work after the military and was hired by a local man to assist in the planning stages for the Woodstock Festival in Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock (2009), cross-dressing and using the name Vilma. The character's unapologetic self-confidence and basic usefulness make Vilma right at home in an already quirky environment. Schreiber also played a trans woman hanging out at a suicide hotline at Christmastime in Nora Ephron's black comedy Mixed Nuts (1994). Apparently the movie got very mixed reviews, despite having a cast including Steve Martin, Madeline Kahn and Adam Sandler; I've never seen it but I'm definitely interested.
