Nobody watched The Monkees?
My family and I watched the first season over the summer. It's silly, but the best part is hearing the old songs again. I've read a lot of behind the scenes stuff on the show and the band in general. Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones were hired as actors while Peter Tork and Michael Nesmith were hired as musicians. To me, Davy and Micky were the most talented. (It also helps they had great comedic timing.) Peter was recommended for the show by his friend Stephen Stills (then of Buffalo Springfield), who was passed over. Mike basically tried to control everything. He was responsible for getting music supervisor Don Kirshner fired. Mike also didn't get along with Peter very well, mainly because they didn't have a lot in common. The show got cancelled because the band wanted to change the format to a variety show, but NBC refused.

Whoa! Top FIVE? From the '60's? I imagine you're meaning the entire decade, from 1960 to 1969? And you want people to pick only five from a decade of an ever and rapidly changing television landscape! What IS it with people and their arbitrary numbers? "Best 5", Best 10" "10 Most hated?" Plus you're talking about a decade when I went from being 9 years old to 18. With viewing tastes changing radically several times over that span. Many of my favorites at the start of the '60's were hold overs from the late '50's. Like LEAVE IT TO BEAVER and BACHELOR FATHER. GUNSMOKE and BONANZA. And were still around by the '70's. And by the end of the '60's other favorites have run their course and were long gone. But not wanting to be a complete spoilsport( or a complete however you wish to fill in the blank ) I'll give it a try. THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES HAZEL THE TWILIGHT ZONE BURKE'S LAW THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW Honorable mentions: THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW MY FAVORITE MARTIAN THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS COMEDY HOUR THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW VALENTINE'S DAY ROWAN AND MARTIN'S LAUGH-IN Sepiatone

I just about drove off the road during a recent election. Some wiseacre had plunked a Vote No.6 sign on their lawn. Sadly my photos of it were lost during unpleasant iPhone incident. Sadly Patrick Patrick McGoohan didn't win. Maybe I dreamt the whole thing. PS I hope Santa brings me a Portmeirion holiday package for Xmas. Danger Man / The Prisoner Star Trek The Twilight Zone Batman Thunderbirds

I was gonna put this in the "Forgotten" thread, but noticed it asked about forgotten shows from the '70's. But this was from the '60's.
A few years before their smash variety show and at the height of their popularity, The Smothers Brothers tried a comedy TV show that wasn't around for long.

It's crazy that he and Larry Matthews, who played Rob and Laura's son, Richie, are the only ones left. There are some 60's TV shows who have only one cast member left, however. Tina Louise is the only one of Gilligan's Island and Micky Dolenz is the only one of The Monkees.

Just like it always struck me that the youngest member of the cast of THE GOLDEN GIRLS played the oldest character(Estelle Getty playing Sophia Petrillo) And was also the first cast member to die.

Sepiatone I did not know that about Estelle Getty. Betty White, who was the oldest Golden Girls cast member, was the last surviving cast member of TWO TV casts - The Golden Girls AND The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
Another case is Davy Jones, who is the youngest cast member of The Monkees, passing away first. Unlike Estelle Getty's character, though, it isn't established if Davy's character on the show is the oldest.

Betty was oldest by only a few months as both her and Bea Arthur were born in 1922. Betty on Jan. 17th and Bea on May 13th. I long had no idea they were that close in age.
No age(as far as I recall) of any character member was ever mentioned on THE MONKEES. I suppose we were to assume they were all the same age. But on television, especially with child characters, often the actors portraying them are older than the character is supposed to be. Like I assumed that actor STANLEY LIVINGSTON was younger than me because his character Chip Douglas was in lower grades in school than I was at the same time. But it turns out the actor is EIGHT MONTHS older than I am.

The Andy Griffith Show That Girl I Dream of Jeannie The Donna Reed Show (started in 50s, but in my mind it's a 60s show) The Dick Van Dyke Show Gilligan's Island
I love Scooby Doo, but since it started in 69, it's more 70s to me.

My top 5 favorite 60s TV Shows:
Get Smart The Avengers Twilight Zone Andy Griffith Show Star Trek
I love many TV westerns but all my favorite ones (Rawhide, Wagon Train, Gunsmoke, Cheyenne, Rifleman etc..) in the 50s and continued on into the 60s, so I'm not listing them as 60s favorites. Take Gunsmoke; I don't really enjoy the color ones as much and especially the ones with Festus (color or not), so most of the Gunsmoke episodes I love were made in the 50s (I especially like the half-hour ones which ended in 1961).

Yeah, I've been watching those GUNSMOKE reruns on the INSPIRATION channel. It's taken quite a long time for me to finally warm up(a little) to Festus. But as I (probably) earlier stated, I often chuckle to myself in amusement whenever episodes with BURT REYNOLDS show up largely because of his character, called Quint, was often referred to as "Squint" by my Mother, of course in jest. And of course, anyone could see why. And notice too James, how much both the Marshal's office and the Long Branch saloon changed in a few short years from the show's 1955 beginnings. Sepiatone

Sepiatone You and I are watching a lot of INSP. I like it but I've been watching it so much I'm starting to see running into the same episodes now. Reynolds is my favorite side-kick on Gunsmoke. Sometimes Chester gets under my skin just like he does Doc, but as I think you know, I find Festus to be the most annoying character in classic T.V. ever. It used to be Nabors on Andy Griffith but Festus is now #1. (and I like Ken Curtis when he plays characters other than Festus which he did a few times in Gunsmoke and other westerns).
