John Farrow directs Kay Francis.
During his early period as a director in Hollywood, John Farrow helmed some crowd pleasing B melodramas at Warner Brothers. On two occasions he worked with Kay Francis.

I think most people know this, but he married super-cute and talented Maureen O'Sullivan (one of the first screen Janes from Tarzan, and still one of the best) with one of their children being Mia.

Farrow did some good work over at Warner Bros. before signing on with RKO and then Paramount.

Yeah, I have to say I am a fan of his work at all those studios. He's one of those directors whose output gets taken for granted and overlooked. I was eager to devote a month to him and the various collaborations he had with a few top stars.

Farrow is one of those directors that may not bring a strong personal style to the films he directs, but is able to create a solid end product getting good performances from actors and working well with the production crew at each of the studios. E.g. Farrow's films with Alan Ladd like Two Years Before the Mast or Ray Miland with Alias Nick Beal.

You have pretty much guessed the direction I was planning to take this thread in the weeks ahead. I'm intending to look at Farrow directing Patrick Knowles at RKO; Farrow directing Alan Ladd at Paramount; and Farrow directing John Wayne at Warner Brothers.
I had also considered Farrow directing Ray Milland at Paramount...but chose to go with the John Wayne pictures since they give us a window into Farrow's work in the 50s and it brings him full circle back to WB.

John Farrow directs John Wayne.
In the mid-50s, Farrow directed Wayne in a few motion pictures that were made at Warner Brothers. They also collaborated on PLUNDER OF THE SUN, an action adventure flick that starred Glenn Ford which Wayne's company produced. In fact, Ford was the original choice for HONDO, which Wayne would again produce...but Ford didn't want to work with Farrow again, so Duke stepped into that role. Incidentally, John Wayne had a special deal with Warners which allowed him to own HONDO a decade or so after the studio had exhausted its cinematic potential through the initial release and subsequent re-releases. In 1967, after the rights had reverted fully to Wayne's company, he redeveloped it as a weekly television series starring Ralph Taeger.
