First, that's a clever and cool tribute you did for Brooks Robinson, jamesjazzguitar. Fifty years ago on this day, Nolan Ryan fanned 16 batters to go one up on Sandy Koufax's seasonal best of 382 strikeouts. Given the feat occurred during the post-1968 era and the first year of the designated hitter, it probably is greater than 'just' one strikeout to Koufax's still National League record. Typical of Nolan Ryan at the time, though, he walked seven enroute to his sixteenth "K" and the Angels needed five runs to win the game... However more overpowering a pitcher Nolan Ryan might have been in comparison to Sandy K, relative to their times, Koufax arguably was the superior mounds man in his best years.

I have seen both Ryan and Koufax. Ryan when he was with the Angels and I was a teen. Koufax was the first game my dad took me too when I was just 5 or so years old. I agree with your comments: Ryan having the better overall career, but no one had a better 5-year period than Koufax (62 - 66).

Regarding your first ballgame, jamesjazzguitar, what an awesome introduction - Sandy Koufax!
