Though both films were produced by Warner Brothers, the British title came first and is based on a different novel. So technically the Hollywood production is not a remake. Probably studio execs liked the title of the first film and simply decided to reuse it.
The British version stars Emlyn Williams and is a little more gritty. There are some highly effective storm scenes near the beginning, and we really get a feel for the hazardous conditions faced by truck drivers. Of course, the version with George Raft is probably better known and equally satisfying to watch.
