Jean Harlow as the title character a social financial gold digger with no conscience about the harm she does to others. It's kinda run of the mill '30s film, nothing particularly outstanding. But being precode, Harlow has no comeuppance, doesn't pay the penalty for her deeds. In fact, REDHEADED WOMAN ends that she rises higher socially and financially. That's what I like about the film. Not condoning her behavior, but more realistic than code films-not everyone pays the price of their wrongs.

Not sure what you mean by 'run of the mill '30s film', since the fact there is no comeuppance makes the film highly unique even for a pre-code. Similar type of woman characters in pre-codes (e.g., Bady Face with Stanwyck) are humbled at the end of the film. The pre-code version of The Letter is like Red Headed Woman in that there is no comeuppance. I agree 100% that, generally, pre-codes are more realistic than code films, but mostly the content and context leading up to the ending. I.e. most pre-code ending put the woman in her as-defined-by-men, place. E.g., Female with Ruth Chatterton. TCM showed this yesterday and the contrived ending is much too common with pre-codes.

ha-ha-ha. JJGuitar, you and I are separated by a common language. REDHEADED WOMAN is just another gold digger film until the last scene. Because it was pre-code, the outstanding final scene could be included.-We are saying the same thing.
I didn't say that precode films in general didn't have the golddigger pay the penalty. I said because this was precode the ending could be included. I also didn't say it was the only film that the female doesn't pay the price. I prefer the ending of the Jeanne Eagles THE LETTER.
I am quite aware that many films of all decades have women pay dearly for behaving outside leftover Victorian norms.
