I loved Columbo. I thought he didn't have any children. Then Kate Mulgrew did a series called Mrs. Columbo. There was a daughter and during the show Mrs. Columbo got a divorce. There was more Columbo movies after that and Lt. Columbo seemed happily married.

A notable example of this is what happened with Dallas and its spinoff Knots Landing.
When Patrick Duffy quit Dallas in 1985, his character Bobby Ewing was killed off in the season cliffhanger that spring. He was shown to flatline on screen, which seemed very permanent to viewers.
In the fall, the Ewing family mourned his death and black sheep brother Gary (Ted Shackleford) who lived in Knots Landing, California, traveled to Dallas for the memorial service. Gary's temporary absence in Knots Landing was explained by other characters commenting on him going home for awhile to deal with his brother's death.
In 1986, Patrick Duffy wanted to return to the show he had quit, so the producers of Dallas decided to make the whole 1985-86 season a dream. The infamous dream season. The 1986 season cliffhanger had Bobby Ewing very much alive, in his ex-wife Pam's shower.
All the plots on Dallas were reworked, back to before Bobby had "died." But none of his death was undone on Knots Landing. Gary's brother Bobby remained dead on that show, and there were no longer any more references to him, as that would jar viewers and cause continuity problems with the parent show, where Bobby was far from dead.
I suppose this happened because the producers and writers of Knots Landing did not want to turn a whole season of their show into a dream and undo all the plots they had presented over the previous twelve months. As a result of this, from 1986 forward, there were no more crossovers between the two shows...their storylines seemed to exist in 'separate universes.'
If Dallas had made Bobby's death a hoax (like he had gone into a witness protection program or had been revived at the last minute off screen) instead of a dream, it probably would have been easier to undo the death on Knots Landing. And then the fictional "reality" of both shows would have stayed in sync.

I, for one, am happy to have watched neither show.
