Joe Kane had a long and distinguished career directing films and television. He began as a B western director at Republic Pictures in the mid-1930s. While he would later expand into other areas, he was primarily associated with westerns and even a lot of his television work in the 1950s and 1960s was in the western genre.
It all started with him directing Gene Autry. Check out two early efforts that put him...and Gene...on the cinematic map!

Joseph Kane directs Bill Elliott in two westerns with medium budgets. At this point, Republic was in the process of graduating to more "A" films:

When Joseph Kane was assigned to direct Vera Ralston, he was given a more substantial budget than the earlier films he'd worked on at Republic. This was because Ralston was the girlfriend (subsequent wife) of Republic boss Herbert Yates...the idea was to provide some high polish showcases for Miss Ralston.
Perhaps the highlight of this period is a glossy epic western called JUBILEE TRAIL (1954). It costars Joan Leslie, Forrest Tucker and Pat O'Brien and was made in Trucolor.

Also worth checking out is GUNFIRE AT INDIAN GAP (1957).

This later "A" western was shot in black-and-white and seems to be influenced by television productions. After Republic closed its doors, Joe Kane easily transitioned to television and he directed some of the more memorable season 2 episodes of Rawhide before moving on to other well-known series.
