She had already scored a hit on Broadway and in Warners Brothers’ GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933, when she was signed to a long-term contract at RKO. There didn’t seem to be any type of material she couldn’t play– romantic trifles like IN PERSON; women’s stories like STAGE DOOR and TENDER COMRADE; and of course, those insanely successful musicals where she danced with Fred Astaire. The high point, though, was her turn in the romance drama KITTY FOYLE, for which she earned an Oscar. She would leave RKO in the mid-1940s, but she did return a decade later for one of the studio’s final films.

I think my favorite Ginger Rogers performance from an RKO film is as Ellie May Adams in PRIMROSE PATH. My very favorite Ginger film, though, is I'LL BE SEEING YOU. I also thought Shirley Temple was fantastic in the film.

I think my favorite Ginger Rogers performance from an RKO film is as Ellie May Adams in PRIMROSE PATH. Glad you mentioned PRIMROSE PATH...as it's been awhile since I've seen it. If I recall correctly, she and Joel McCrea had previously costarred in another RKO picture, a precode called CHANCE AT HEAVEN (1933).

re:Shirley Temple. Isn't it strange that Temple proved she could act in I'LL BE SEEING YOU; SINCE YOU WENT AWAY and FORT APACHE, but the public didn't want an adult Shirley Temple, as Ben said in his intro to SINCE YOU WENT AWAY. You can't make people watch a film.
On the other hand, was it that casting people didn't want her. In the films I mentioned above, she wasn't playing the main character. Maybe people wouldn't go to a film she was the star of, but how do the powers-that-be decide they would have more ticket sales if Temple hadn't been in I'LL BE SEEING YOU.
As to Ginger, my favorite performance is in BLACK WIDOW. That film may rate as a neglected film. Cast incudes Van Heflin, Gene Tierney; George Raft; Reginald Owen; Otto Kruger; and an adult Peggy Ann Gardner. Cast like that I could enjoy hearing them read the encyclopedia.

If I recall correctly, she and Joel McCrea had previously costarred in another RKO picture, a precode called CHANCE AT HEAVEN (1933). As usual, you're spot on, she did co-star with McCrea in both. Both are excellent movies with outstanding performances by Rogers. "Primrose Path" is one of the few Code-era movies that somehow made it past the censors with some real-life issues only modestly cloaked. I discuss them in my comments below. As always, feel free to ignore any and all of them.
Here are some brief comments on "Chance at Heaven:" "Chance at Heaven"
And some more-robust comments on "Primrose Path:" "Primrose Path"
And some comments on the book "February Hill," which is the book the movie "Primrose Path" is based on: "February Hill"
