I like both versions. Gaynor's film is better storytelling. Judy's version is two films in one: Judy in concert interspersed with a story.

I like both versions. Gaynor's film is better storytelling. Judy's version is two films in one: Judy in concert interspersed with a story. I think you summed up Garland's film perfectly. And to me, that blend does not really work well. I prefer the 1937 version.
Now, I don't mind Garland's last film I COULD GO ON SINGING which also has concert footage...but it's not trying to co-opt an earlier classic story.
