This Sunday, August 20th at 3pm ET / 1pm MT / 12pm PT, we will be watching and sharing our thoughts about the 1939 movie "These Glamour Girls," starring Lew Ayres, Lana Turner, Marsha Hunt and Jane Bryan
Somehow, despite being made under The Motion Picture Production Code, "These Glamour Girls" takes a reasonably honest look at the darker side of the surface-pretty college life of the 1930s.
Class prejudices, mean girls, deceitful guys trying to "score," and family pressures are just some of the ugly aspects of college life that are explored in this surprisingly frank movie.
With a strong cast, including "sweater girl" Lana Turner, "These Glamour Girls" avers that all those other happy "let's go to the big game or spring dance" rah-rah college movies of the 1930s/40s were just Hollywood hokum.

I find it interesting that two Warner Brother actresses, Jane Bryan and Anita Louise are in this MGM film.
The film has many 'still getting their feet wet' young MGM actresses, but I guess MGM wanted some more experienced young talent and Bryan and Louise brought that to this film. (e.g., Louise was in some WB high profile films and Bryan had been in films with Bette Davis, Bogie, etc...).
I do wonder what WB received in return for this loan-out.

Please join us Sunday, August 20th at 3pm ET / 1pm MT / 12pm PT, for "These Glamour Girls" to indulge in some delicious snobbery at college that does, though, turn quite dark.

Oh, I didn't realise I was in it until I saw that picture! Good, I haven't really seen many Marsha Hunt films.
I expect my father must have seen this at an impressionable age because he always described pretty,"dressy," women as glamour girls.

I expect my father must have seen this at an impressionable age because he always described pretty,"dressy," women as glamour girls. She's not the lead, but in an ensemble cast, she has a impactful role. Her character is the one I think of most when I think of this movie.
As a Marsha Hunt fan, I think you'll enjoy her performance in this one.
My dad was born in '24, based on your comment about his use of "glamour," I'm guessing your dad was probably born around the same time as mine (probably a bit later as my dad was already 40 when I was born), but please don't feel any pressure to share his age if you don't want too.

Yep, my father was about the same age and I was also the late surprise to an older couple who thought their family was complete. Just a little something for the boys to tease!
One thing I love about these old movies is thinking of my parents watching them and what they would have said about them at the time. I never wonder if they saw them, that generation seemed to go to all the movies.
My father lived long enough to see some of them again on AMC. He loved the westerns, was keeping track of how many movies Harry Morgan was in, and raved about how beautiful Donna Reed was -- never realising how much she looked like my mother had when she was young.

Have you seen the Alan Ladd \ Donna Reed film Chicago Deadline (1949)? This is a fine noir and Reed have a gritty part as a gal that gets involved with hoods. Ladd's character is a little too heroic \ superman, but this was all too common once Ladd became one of Paramount's biggest stars. Also with Arthur Kennedy, as Reed's brother, and always menacing Berry Kroeger as the head hood.

No I haven't seen it, James. I'll keep an eye out for it, I don't think I've seen her in a gritty part!

Please join us tomorrow, August 20th at 3pm ET / 1pm MT / 12pm PT, for "These Glamour Girls" to see "towny" Lana Turner go toe-to-toe with the snobbish coeds.
Plus, she gets to wear this adorable hat. Showing again how popular the pointed hat for girls at college was in the 1930s.

Sorry if I missed something, but I was curious how you are synchronizing the experience of watching a film together. Is it up to the viewers to start playing the film on their own computers at the agreed-on start time? And then you post messages to the message board during the film?
I was wondering if anyone has considered using an application such as Zoom to set up a meeting. Of course there are privacy issues involved. My limited understanding is that if one person was willing to create a Zoom account, then they could host a meeting that other users could join and share their screen with them. You could then set up a chat window where the viewers could post their comments while the film is playing. The host and viewers would not need to share any webcam video of themselves (or audio) and could just use it to share the video of the movie and the chat window with the text messages. This might provide a more real-time way to share the experience.
I am not sure how good Zoom desktop sharing would be for providing the video of the film itself. If adequate, that would also allow the meeting host to provide the video and the other viewers could watch the shared Zoom desktop at the same time which would take care of the synchronization. If the Zoom desktop is not good enough, the viewers could still play the video on their own computers and just use the chat feature to share text messages. One negative of this approach is that the comments would not immediately be part of the message board. Perhaps a transcript of the comments could be posted to the message board after the viewing to provide a record to read later.
These are just some thoughts that I have. There may be other factors I am not thinking of that would preclude this type of approach.
I also don’t want to interfere with the planned showing of These Glamour Girls on Sunday. I just wanted to bring this up for possible consideration for a movie in the future.

We want the comments to be part of the message board, so they are archived here for future study and enjoyment.
I think your suggestion/idea for a Zoom meeting would work if we ever did our own online film festival. That could be advertised as a larger event for us.
I don't want to change the format of how we've been doing the Live on Sunday viewing and posting, because it's fairly simple and doesn't require extra technology.
Not all of us are watching these movies on our computers. The week we did CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS, I was using a Warner Archive DVD which I watched on my TV while posting comments on the laptop.

Me: "How 'bout, after the popcorn, we try some Whoppers today for a change?"
Fawn: "Sno-caps!"
Me: "'We always have Sno-caps, let's switch it up. What do you say?"
Fawn: "Sno-caps!"
Me: "Whoppers have a malted flavor. Sounds good, no?"
Fawn: "Sno-caps!"
Me: "I'll get the Sno-caps."
Fawn: "If you want."
Me: [sighs]
