Of those two, I enjoy the '36 version more as, while both are goofy stories, the '36 version feels a bit more real and I didn't think making it into a musical really did much for it. Plus, I prefer Janet Gaynor to Powell as the female lead.
As to the intros, you can feel how much faster they are delivered today as, my guess, younger audiences just expect and will only stay around for quickly delivered intros.

I've never seen the 1936 version. I liked the 1953 version with Jane Powell and Farley Granger.

I told Yancey that I like both versions equally. Both films have a sort of 'old fashioned' feel to them. A fun thing about the original is seeing Robert Taylor and James Stewart at the beginning of their motion picture careers. Janet Gaynor is probably a bit too old for her role, but still gives a nice engaging performance.

Jane Powell's screen persona looks like a better fit, but then most of the movies I have seen Janet Gaynor in are dramas where she plays a serious type of role.

It's been at least five years since I've seen either version, but my memory is, and of course it's only an opinion, that Gaynor was quite cute and vivacious in the role. I think she, more than Taylor, made the picture work.

In early 1980 I was lucky enough to see her in Harold and Maude on Broadway. The show lasted 21 previews and 4 performances. She was great but the show didn't work.
