I much prefer the remake to the original.
I think Bing Crosby, Robert Cummings, Red Buttons, Van Heflin, Stephanie Powers - and especially Alex Cord- all are superior to the originals. The only ones who aren't are Michael Conners (who is doing John Carradine's role) and Ann-Margret (doing Clair Trevor's role). Keenan Wynn as the villain, Plummer, is about equal to Tom Tyler.
Almost everyone I've told this to disagrees with me - lots of John Wayne fans, ay - but I see it the way I see it.

I agree with you that the overall cast in the 1966 film is superior to the cast in the 1939 film. But the Dallas character is the 2nd most important role in the film, and Claire Trevor is vastly superior to Ann-Margret, and thus I don't have a strong preference either way.
